“A beautiful Guesthouse, great hospitality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2011

We stayed at the Guesthouse for several nights and had a great experience.
The room was large and confortable and overlooked the beautiful yard. The owners were very nice and gave us tons of advice on what to do and even lent us snorkeling gear to explore the nearby reef.
We would definitely go back there and recommend everyone to do the same!

We booked this guesthouse based on the reviews on this website and we were not disappointed. All the positive, excellent things previous reviewers have said are true! We were after a peaceful and relaxing stay for four nights and this is exactly what we got and more.

Breakfast was delicious. The rooms are beautiful; so clean, comfortable and tastefully decorated and they all seem to have a pool and/or garden view however the rooms on the first floor (where we stayed) probably are brighter and have a better view. The surroundings are gorgeous - just fabulous to watch the monkeys and mongoose running around the garden while chilling at the pool and listening to the ocean in the background. The owners are the friendliest and most accommodating I have ever met and they really do go out of their way to make sure you have the best holiday possible. While checking out and chatting to them we mentioned we were going to the Croc centre outside St Lucia on our way back to Durban, and while we were at the centre we bumped into Rene who had driven all the way there to personally deliver some items we had accidentally left in our room. They are both so thoughtful and deliver customer service over and above anything I have experienced anywhere else.

There is nothing even remotely negative that I can say about Elephant Coast Guesthouse; we had the perfect stay so thank you to Rene and Gonnie for this.

Gonnie and Renee are the only kind of people who should open a B&B. They are a lovely Dutch couple in their early 50s who have been in South Africa for 3 years and love it. They have created a little oasis in the middle of St. Lucia and a home away from home for their guests.

We arrived at the Elephant Coast Guesthouse by car from Durban. We were greeted with open arms from both of them, who sat us down in their lovely outside patio, offered us something to drink and gave us valuable advice about what to do and see in and around St. Lucia in our limited time there (2 days)

They then showed us to our rooms, which were beautifully decorated and impeccably clean. The bathroom had both a shower and a lovely, large bathtub in which to relax after a day out and about. Every room faced the pool and garden and has a private balcony with a wooden table and chairs on which we sat at night to gaze at the stars.

After we settled in, we decided to go for a beautiful car ride to Cape Vidal, through the St. Lucia park, which was lovely. Unfortunately on our way back to the hotel, our car battery died….so we talked to Renee about it and he took our battery’s measurements and offered to go buy a new battery for us the next day and fit it in, while we went on a game drive which we had previously booked. In the end, he fixed our car, got us a great deal on the battery and allowed us to continue our road trip up to Mozambique. Given that this was Easter weekend in South Africa, we were incredibly lucky to have had him and his help. He was just so helpful and really went the extra mile to help us out while making it seem like no big deal at all.

Our game drive took place in the Imfolozi Nature Reserve. Gonnie and Renee had recommended it and booked for us at the last minute (on Easter Sunday). The safari 4X4 drive fantastic, as the weather was spectacular and we saw the Big 5. It was an incredible day out, with breakfast and lunch out in the bush. We had to get up at 4:30 am and Renee personally came to ensure we didn’t miss the trip.

On the last day of our stay, we got up for breakfast on the B&B’s patio with all the other guests and stuffed our faces. The staff helping out are lovely, the service is impeccable and the range of food is wide and of very very high quality.

All in all, we highly recommend staying here! Gonnie and Renee are available but not intrusive, welcoming but not at all stifling. It was like a home away from home and a perfect base from which to explore St. Lucia!!! It was such a pleasure - we’ll be back for sure!

Room Tip: Book well in advance as there are only 5 rooms!

Stayed in St Lucia having attended friends wedding, looked for value for money and location and there are tonnes of guest houses to chose from. Personally I thought I made the right choice as it was the last house on the beach road out of St lucia. The wildlife WAS on the doorstep, literally. 6 hippo's were in the garden the night before I arrived. I saw bushpigs, vervet monkeys and mongoose within 20 m of the place. Easy walk into town. Lovely ground floor room overlooking the pool (which isnt for exercise, more of a plunge pool). Friendly staff, beach towels and umbrella's available for use. Can book tours directly with them too (recommend Jeff at Euro Zulu). As I had friends staying in St Lucia it was great to come and go to spend the day and evenings with them. Low season so town was quiet - just the way i like it.

We were meant to stay two nights in St Lucia but liked the B&B so much we extended our stay. We had an upstairs room called the Honeymoon double. It was light and spacious - at the foot of the big, comfy bed there's two chairs and a coffee table. The bathroom was large with a shower and a separate bath. There's a fridge as well in the wardrobe and big fluffy bathrobes. Outside the room is a balcony with a table and chairs.
The pool is small and more for cooling off than swimming, the loungers were good and the garden is pretty. We didn't see hippos sadly but prints were found in the garden! Breakfast was lovely - started with a fruit salad bought to the table, then bacon and eggs, and there's a buffet area with lots of cereals and fruit juice etc. The staff were very friendly, the owners very welcoming and friendly and I think the ratio of price to quality can't be beaten. We paid 730R a night. It's a 5-10 min walk to the restaurants - take a torch as some of the street lighting on the way is not great and hippos could be lurking!
I would definitely go back and recommend the B&B to anyone.

The owners of this B&B simply get it! Nice rooms with huge bathrooms.
Nice pool, lovely garden and the best of all good atmosphere.
If you ever start thinking of opening your own B&B, come here and have a look. This is how we think it is supposed to be done. We only would add one thing that we missed in this B&B: Wireless internet.

Shame of St. Lucia is the lack of good restaurants. But that is something the owners of this B&B can’t help....

Surroundings are great, lot of activities to do in the area. Good place to stop and lay back for at least 3 days.

We spent a week at Elephant Coast in 2 of the upstairs rooms, both of which were very nice. Downstairs rooms are well equipped (although one we saw was fairly small and has no doors leading to the outside) but are very dark because of the extensive foliage immediately outside the rooms. One of the reasons we chose this accommodation was the promise of viewing animals in the garden. Although animals do indeed visit the garden, multiple palms have been planted around the pool which obscure most of the view of the garden, significantly reducing visibility. The owners have gone to a lot of trouble to learn about local amenties and are a very good source of advice. They were also very helpful, for example by providing snorkels and a sunshade. The staff were exceptional and very well treated by the owners, Breakfast was excellent and plentiful. The pool only has sunbeds for 6, so could not accommodate all the guests, although to be fair this was never an issue during our stay even though the accommodation was full throughout. The pool is also fairly small. St Lucia itself lacks a good quality restaurant, and with hindsight a week there was probably a bit too long as there is nothing else in the near vicinity. The local 9 hole golf course was very reasonably priced and offered club hire and fairly relaxed rules about attire etc. The Ski Club is a little out of town, but beautifully located on the banks of the river with very helpful staff.
