Stayed just one night, but would have happily stayed more. The whole town is preserved as it was from gold mining days, except for all the cars and souvenir stalls. The hotel was excellent. We had booked a suite at a fabulous rate (double, twin, lounge, bathroom and wc) which turned out to be in an 'annexe'. The annexe was separate from the hotel, being across and down the road. However, we just could not fault it - it was an old house with a covered porch all the way round, with fabulous views. Very well appointed. Beds were firm but we had a quiet night sleep. Note no telephone, radio or TVs as, as they explain, they would not be in character. Buffet evening meal and buffet breakfast in the hotel restaurant (Digger's Den!) were very good.
This is a must-stay place. The surrounding Drakensburg Mountains are sensational. Whether stopping or passing through, visit Gods Window, Bourkes Luck, Three Ronadvels etc. They do not disappoint at all.
Good place also to pick up the souvenirs. However, you must haggle otherwise you will pay over-the-top prices.
Don't get caught by the car-wash touts. The hotel will provide you with a piece of paper to stick in your car to stop them, if you want.
All-in-all, OUTSTANDING
