“Aesthetically pleasing, quiet and tranquil - the perfect getaway!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

We stayed in the honeymoon suite - what a pleasure! The owners definitely know what they are doing! The setting was extraordinary and amazingly romantic! Tasteful and rustic, with everything you need to spend a most memorable weekend with your loved one - worth every penny!

We stayed in the honeymoon suite, and had the most gorgeous view over the valley. The jacuzzi on the deck was great, and the bath also had a beautiful view across the valley. The outside shower on the deck was intimidating at first but what a lovely experience. The bottle of bubbly in the fridge waiting for us was a nice touch.

There's not a lot to do at the venue itself, but you're well placed for the region, and the food at The Windmill is superb. Highly recommend the cheese platter!

Beautiful and tranquil. A gem.

Room Tip: The honeymoon suite is worth the extra.

Set 17KM from Hazyview and 27KM from Sabie, the cottages are truly a romantic get away. They are furnished to the highest standard, king size bed with quality linens. Bathroom with walk in shower and lovely toiletries. There is a small kitchenette which includes a microwave, toaster, fridge but no oven or hob. There is tea and coffee plus fresh milk.
An excellent breakfast is provided on your wooden deck at the front of the cottage and includes cereal, wide selection of fruit, yoghurt, croissant and fabulous sandwiches.
The property is well located for visiting Kruger, Blyde River Canyon, Pilgrims Rest and other local sites.
Highly recommended although driving up and down the Sabie/Hazyview road may become a little tiresome during an extended stay.

A friend & I rented 2 separate cottages that was our 'home away' for 10 days. Each had a deck with table/chairs overlooking the tree filled Sabie valley that provided our 'backyard view' for 10 days. Variety of birds provide the music from dawn to dusk. Cottages are spacious, very high ceilings, very clean, separate kitchen area stocked daily with tea, coffee, bottle water & fresh milk for cereal. We shopped groceries in Hazyview, which has 2 large box stores, including fresh hot food for dinner pick up, which we did frequently on the way home from the Kruger. Beds & linens were excellent comforts, and maid service (mature long term employees) was provided daily rather than weekly for long term stay. (there was no tub, which would have been an issue if my wife had come along, but I am a shower guy & the pressure & hot water was great after a long day in the bush) Soap & shampoo products were provided as well as big towels.
The main building upon arrival has the winery, beer & cheese shop as part of the registration area which is convenient. The building is located right off the highway & is well lit at night so it is easy to find your way. The property is fenced with electric for night safety, and a guard lets you access when returning after hours. Thomas, owner, is a large jovial fellow who fits well with the many beers to pour, and having lived near there his lifetime, he is very knowledgable of where to go and how best to get there.

Our mission was to photograph the wild game in Kruger which is easily accessed daily thru Phabeni Gate @ Hazyview; the Blydes Canyon attractions and wildlife sanctuaries. The Windmill provides an excellent & affordable base place that is all you would want in comfort, services and convenience. (the exteriors are basic non painted block which at first glance might seem unfinished, but then you come to realize they sit naturally among the nature, and the interiors are very well done)

I could (and would) stay for an extended period & be perfectly happy...so quiet, comfortable & a great nites sleep after a day out and about.

The owners obviously do not wish to take any risks which a normal business would take. Only 100% payment permitted up front - no deposit. Credit Card Authorisation Form states "cancellations within 24 hours will incur 100% cancellation charge". However, cancelling days before we were due to travel due to medical emergency, we still incurred the full charge which was almost 6000zar! Owners agreed to use this payment as a CREDIT for a future booking but on condition of completion of another credit card authorisation form. They said if we made another cancellation they would take the full amount again. This is contrary to the agreement of having paid once already and using it as a credit. Their cancellation policy is unfair compared to other lodges/guest houses and we do not now trust them with our credit card details again.

Hi,

This review is clearly an emotional response from a very unhappy guest who had to cancel at the last minute and forfeited their payment. This guest was offered 'free nights' in exchange for the late cancellation of the booked nights due to the medical emergency and was asked to secure them incase of another cancellation and was not asked to pay again for them.

The ratings should be disregarded as this guest did not actually stay with us and therefore can not comment on 'cleaniness, rooms' etc....

Our other reviews speak for themselves?

In late Nov 2008, my wife and I stayed at the Windmill Wine Shop & Cottages for two nights while exploring the Blyde River Canyon area (eventually on way to Kruger). We rented a car at the Mpumalanga airport for our tour and easily found our way to the shop/cottages in under 1.5 hours. The Windmill Wine Shop & Cottages are easily located on the R536 between Hazyview and Sabie (~10 min west of Hazyview).... a great homebase for the Blyde River Canyon region.

Upon arrival, Thomas & Jacqui (owners) warmly introduced us to the shop and property over a nice glass of wine. The shop, which includes a restaurant with seating, has a great selection of various wines, beers (a nice draft microbrew selection), cheeses and various snacks. The cottages are located adjacent to the shop in a secured (fence & guard) area with parking available.

Arriving late in the day and near closing time for the shop/restaurant (5pm), we opted for a fantasticly presented cheese and meat tray with a chilled Chardonnay which was delivered to our cottage while we unpacked and settled in.

The cottage (unit #4) was perfect for us! Spending our previous week in a larger lodge with various travelers, we needed some peace & quiet to rebalance ourselves. This was definately the place! The cottages are newly built and modernly decorated with all the required amenities (full kitchen, living room, bathroom and comfortable bedroom). Along the back of the cottage is a large porch overlooking the river valley below. Although the mosquitos were a bit pesky at dusk, we enjoyed the peace and serenity it offered. Dinner was enjoyed in silence just viewing the valley and hearing the various song birds traveling between trees.

As the Wine Shop closes at 5pm, later dinner options require traveling by car to the surrounding areas (i.e. Sabie, Graskop, Hazyview) which have plenty of selections. Thomas & Jacqui offer various suggestions to suite your mood.

As for the hosts, I can't say enough about their warmth and help during our trip. They assisted us with plans/touring in the area and following travels to Kruger. They even made sure we had a breakfast-to-go the first morning we went touring in the Blyde River Canyon.....which we enjoyed while viewing a waterfall (a very nice breakfast tray with cheese, marmalades, breads and juices). Throughout our stay, they continually made sure we were finding what we needed.

I highly recommend it for those interested in a well placed, clean and modern, safe, self-catering home away from home. If you are a wine & cheese fanatic such as myself, this is a MUST STAY. Their morning "fully prepared' breakfast at the shop is also a treat to enjoy. Easily my best breakfast in South Africa during my 3 week holiday!

The pictures on the internet does not show how spacious these brand new cottages are. The rooms give you a feeling of luxury. Not the posh kind of luxury, but the modern one. You will not get disturbed, it’s at least 40 meters between each cottage. And you have a really nice view over the green Sabie Valley from your patio. The breakfast was great too.
Windmill is perfectly located between Kruger NP and Blyde River Canyon, and because of the high elevation it’s in a malaria-free area. As a bonus it’s only a 3 minute drive to the restaurant that became our favourite one in South Africa, Bambuu Restaurant & Cocktail Bar. For only R85/pp including wine we had a meal that was sensational both for the eyes and the mouth, in this design restaurant with Cafe del Mar-music next to a small lake. You just have to eat there, at least one evening!
We have stayed at three different b&b’s in this area. They were all fantastic, but if we had to choose one favourite it would be the Windmill
