“A Little piece of Heaven”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2010

When you arrive at Plumbago all your troubles seem to melt away as you enter the quiet serene gardens. We were welcomed very warmly by Ilara and felt at home rght away. Our room was spacious with all the luxuries you would expect at a five star Guesthouse. The bed was covered with flowers and the homemade Belgian choccies were exceptional. We have specific dietary requirements and Ilara went out of her way to accommodate us. The breakfast was excellent with little extras on the buffet that one would not normally encounter on a standard breakfast spread e.g camembert cheese wedges with fig preserves, yum! On the second day of our stay we decided to have a lazy day and requested lunch. The lunch was served to us at the pool and was scrumptious. Ilara is an outstanding cook and the food was well presented. For those that enjoy a swim and not just a dip the pool is large enough to swim lengths and was sparkling clean. The staff are very friendly and always ready to help in any way.

Plumbago is a 7 minute drive to the local restaurants, 20 minutes away from the Kruger Park and not too far from the other natural wonders to be found in our beautiful country. Ilara and Robbie have an excellent knowledge of the area and recommended a good reataurant for dinner on our second night.

Ilara and Robbie are wonderful hosts and we felt like part of the family for our brief stay at Plumbago. Our time there was much too short and on our next trip to the area we will definitely book there again.

I spent my first night in Africa here. Plumbago is like a palace, complete with fountains, gardens, stunning views from the type of luxurious patios you only get in Africa, top class rooms (each is separate building), etc. The meals here are all homemade from the freshest ingedients; the included breakfast is excellent. And the multi-course dinner for approx US $30 is one of the most delicious meals I've had anywhere. Generally, the food everywhere in South Africa is incredible - I found it on par with France (I'm not exaggerating) - but the dinner at Plumbago was amongst the top 2-3 I had on my entire trip.

The service goes far beyond what you'd probably dare hope for. Illara and company will treat you like family, advise you where to go and how, and really know their area inside and out. I felt at comfortable in Africa, even on my very first night. And the location is perfect. Close enough to the city (both White River and Nelspruit) and airport if you need to get there, but right near the Kruger Park as well. The roads all around this part of South Africa are excellent. Overall, a fantastic experience was had by all in our group, and we stayed there for about 7 days or so total.

We have recently had to cancel our booking to Plumbago due to some unexpected but exciting news. We are disappointed not to be staying at Plumbago as all reviews below are excellent. I am writing to express my thanks to ilara. The service re our booking has been well in excess of 5* service and ilara could not have been more accomodating or friendly. I hope one day we or our family will have the opportunity of staying at Plumbago!

Very nice quiet garden bungalow. Beautiful views from the poolside terrace. What made this place special were the owners, Ilara and Rob and their staff and of course the wonderful flowers decorating the bed and bedroom. A TV in the bungalow would have made it perfect but it didn't spoil our stay at Plumbago.

Ilara and Robbie really made us feel a part of their family. Traveling with a one year old baby is never easy, and they were so incredibly accommodating, welcoming, and helpful during our stay. I'd recommend their place to anyone visiting the Mpumalanga / Kruger area. I'd also recommend that you have them prepare dinner for you, which is out of this world. Thank you again Ilara & Robbie.

Stayed here for 3 nights, had a lovely time. Ilara and Robbie are very welcoming and suggested activities to help plan our days. The breakfasts were amazing - best poached eggs in South Africa! The rooms are clean and spacious and filled with little touches like fresh flowers each day. Great base, very peaceful and beautiful. Good facilities - pool and tennis courts, and friendly dogs!

Through the wrought-iron gates at the end of a bougainvillea-lined drive, you will find Plumbago - as pretty as the flower that shares it's name, set on an avocado and banana farm, it sits above the plantation watching over out to the Kruger National Park in the distance. With 1940's jazz in the background it has just the right accompaniment to the nostalgic, colonial-inspired setting. Charming air conditioned rooms with sitting areas, en suite bathrooms,t ea trays and fine bed linen, which have the same casual gracefulness about them with subtle, natural tones. ... more   less
