“Rustic Hotel With A True African Vibe”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2014

Loved this place.

We came as a group and all of our rooms where overlooking the river. The rooms are authentic, as they should be, this is africa, and this feels like africa. I would reccomed this hotel to anyone who wants to have a true experience of this part of the world rather than a modern generic hotel chain.

The staff are super friendly, the food and drinks are very reasonably priced. The outdoor dining area overlooks the main part of the river and you can often view hippo and other animals local to this area from here.

The hotel is in a great location in hazyview for exploring the local sights. We did the panaramic tour taking in the Blyde River Canyon. we also visited the eliphant whisperers which is not something you should miss. There are many other attractions around here including the cheetah project.

Definitely worth a few nights stay while en route to Krugar.

Room Tip: Virgin Holiday guests get free upgrades to the river lodges, but if you aren't with Virgin I rec...

I loved this place! We had our own cottage, the scenery is fabulous and in the evening the Hippos come out! We were sitting on the restaurant patio and the sun had just gone down when 3 hippos came out! A guard makes sure that they don't get too close to you as they are wild animals!! This is very close to Krueger National Park and just watching birds and we also saw a crocodile just hanging out! If you have time of which we did not but you can ride elephants very close to this place. Staff is great!

Room Tip: See if you can get in one of the cottages that overlooks the river.

Stayed here for 3 nights on our tour of SA whilst visiting Kruger National Park. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. The location of the Hotel on the Sabie River was amazing, the hippo's were grazing on the hotels lawns.
We didn't see any crocs fortunately.
Would recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

My son and I spent one night at Hippo Hollow before moving to an expensive resort in Sabi Sands. We had a cottage right on top of the Sabie River. We watched a mother hippo and her baby play in the river almost the entire time we were there.

The room has two twin beds downstairs and a loft with two more twin beds. There is an overhead fan but no air conditioning. Because there are no screens we kept the windows and doors shut the entire time. For that reason the room was slightly musty, but it did not bother me or my son. We were just so thrilled to see hippos so close and for such an extended time.

The restaurant was excellent as was the service. However, there is a kitchenette in the unit so one could cook if they wished.

We would definitely stay at Hippo Hollow again because it is such a good deal.

Room Tip: Absolutely get a room overlooking the river. We watched a mother hippo and her baby play in the wat...

This hotel affords a warm welcome and has a fantastic situation on the banks of the River Sabie. A real Out of Africa experience. Staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are a bit quirky and vary a lot. My room had a gecko in the fuse box which kept interrupting the power supply! Food OK could be better. The best thing are the hippos that come up on to the lawn a few metres away from where guests are enjoying their sundowners and continue to munch grass outside whilst you enjoy your dinner!

Room Tip: overlooking the river

My friend and I spent four nights at Hippo Hollow end of January and had a terrific time. It was the first time my friend had visited South Africa so the setting, the chalet overlooking the Sabie River with the wooden balcony was perfect. The chalets are not luxurious but very comfortable with an African feel- no TV but with the colourful birdlife abounding and hippos- you don't need it. The grounds and pool were kept in perfect condition All staff were extremely helpful and friendly and definitely took time to chat to you and make you feel very welcome. The chef Vusi, came out to check we were enjoying our meals and cooked fish especially for me one night. We were not with a tour so one morning when we came to breakfast later the hot section had been removed but they were quite happy to cook something for us. Reception staff went out of their way to ensure a super time. High praise to all of them. It is the perfect base for visiting Kruger and Mpumalanga. A day trip to Blyde River Canyon, Lisbon Falls is a must. Keep up the good work- you are all doing a wonderful job.

Room Tip: If you want to experience the birds, wildlife, book a river chalet.

We stayed at this property for six days and had a great time. We stayed on the river Sabie in one of the chalets. I think I would have liked to have been in the main part of the hotel the reason being it was very hot and there were lots of insects in and out of room. The staff were very friendly and helpful and went out of their way to make you feel comfortable they were always ready to answer any questions you had for them.
The breakfast buffet was great with lots to choose from we had a wonderful lady named Lindiva T who went out of her way to look after us must say all the staff were awesome. We had lots of fun at the bar with a good selection of drinks. The dinner menu was not my favourite but enjoyed the buffet very much, the chef came out to meet us one night and enquire if the food was to oiur liking very nice man. Overall the place was wonderful with great staff and wonderful grounds kept immaculate.
