“Great stay at Ashbourne”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

Our party of three had a very enjoyable stay of two nights. Rob and Dawn were very friendly, helpful and hospitable and, from the start, we felt welcome and relaxed. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The views from Ashbourne far into the distance are stunning, particularly at sunset, and it is possible to sit and enjoy a glass of wine or whatever while admiring the changing colours of the landscape. We also had a delicious dinner prepared by Dawn.

We had a fantastic four night stay at Ashbourne at the start of a trip to SA. Rob and Dawne were perfect hosts and helped with every request we had - they really made us feel at home. We stayed in the cottage, which was beautiful and very comfortable. Breakfast was fantastic, and the packed breakfast/lunch provided when we had an early start for a day in Kruger was great. Ashbourne is perfectly placed for getting into Kruger, just a short and easy drive to Phabeni Gate. The dogs were great fun and very friendly. We'll definitely stay again on our next trip to Kruger.

Room Tip: All the rooms look great (Rob showed us around them as we weren't sure whether to stay in the co...

We’re a couple that ride motorcycles and with that we tend to travel a lot to surrounding areas from our home town. Approximately 3 hours out of Johannesburg you will enter into what I refer to as the Forest Land of Mpumalanga. Besides the Kruger Park, the province of Mpumalanga boasts a variety of tourist attractions and is a must do, especially if you’re looking for a brief weekend getaway. But my personal favourite are the Sappi timber plantations which provide rows and rows of evergreen trees running alongside the open roads and are quite exquisite to see. For a short drive out of the city, Hazyview is one of the small pleasures of being in the countryside.

On our most recent weekend away trip, we stayed at the Ashbourne Country Escape Bed & Breakfast in Hazyview. If you are tired of staying in impersonal hotels with noisy children and overcrowded public areas, then this will be your very own “peace of heaven”. Ashbourne Country Escape is run by a lovely couple who have your interests at heart, from the second you arrive to the moment you leave you feel like royalty, someone famous maybe, or their only guest of the year. This is because Ashbourne B&B has that personal touch that is lost at your average common hotel or resort.

Situated on a hillside, the landscape views are breathtaking. At dusk we enjoyed sundowners at the “lookout” point whilst watching a picturesque sunset which set the entire valley below on fire; then in the morning we woke up to the sounds of birdsong, poured some coffee and wandered outside to the private veranda, where we watched the sun rise over the Kruger, Sabi River Valley, and the striking lowveld. Our room was spacious and elegantly beautiful with our own en suite bathroom. Decor is tastefully simple, yet elegant; almost rustic but with white satin sheets and a guarantee of impeccable hygiene. The garden and exterior finishes are quaint and homely and leave you with a tranquil feeling from the moment you arrive. Breakfasts are fresh and homely made, not your mass produced foods that have sat in warming tins and shrivelled up or been over cooked, no this breakfast had the wholesome goodness of our hostess’s special touch and tasty flair.

In all, we were so impressed with this charming little spot and we plan to return soon again, hopefully to stay a little longer this time. Thank you again to Rob and Dawne.

Thanks so much Kim. You have gone to such a lot of trouble to write this very comprehensive and complementary review.
It was such a pleasure meeting you and Jason. The weekend seem to end half way through.
Thanks also for the photos you sent through under separate cover. They came out really well, and we would love to use them if we may.
Hope our lives paths cross many times more.
Our fond regards
Rob and Dawne

Hubby and I stayed In the self catering cottage on the 26-27 May which was a real treat! Peaceful and secluded which offers wonderful atmosphere for couples. Cottage is fully equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay, caught up on reading and quality time because there is no distraction of a tv. Overall wonderful stay! Thanks so much Patricia, it was great meeting you both.
Although you gave us a five for overall rating, you marked us down on Value, Position, and sleep quality.
We would really appreciate some feedback from you for three reasons.
Firstly, by listening to our guests, we believe we will achieve a standard for Ashbourne that we aspire to.
Secondly, yours is the first feedback we have had on the Self Catering stone cottage.
Thirdly, we are ready to zoez it up, and would love you to pretend you are standing next to us saying "Hmmmm, I think you should move that, replace this, etc."
I know you lead a busy life, but we would so appreciate your feedback, either through Trip Advisor or through our e-mail.
Fond Regards and best wishes....Rob and Dawne

Thank you so much to Rob and Dawn - we had a wonderful stay at Ashbourne. Amazing and personal hospitality, lovely big rooms with ensuites, fantastic breakfasts, great views, reasonable price, so convenient to Kruger National Park, elephant riding, monkey & birds sanctury, half day drive from Joburg... Ashbourne was so relaxing we didn't want to go anywhere! One cottage has kitchen facilities, so a group can book that and a few rooms and meet up. Also bush bbqs. Rob and Dawn have lots of tales, advice on where to go and plenty of good humour - would go back in a heart beat! Thanks so much Rob & Dawn - we had a wonderful stay:) Can't recommend highly enough. Thanks Sue.....and for taking the time and trouble to post two of your photos. It was lovely meeting you and your family, and we thought of the seven of you leaving for most points of the compass from Johannesburg that evening.
It was the first time we had let out the whole lodge in conjunction with the self catering cottage...and you all seemed to make it work really nicely. Breakfast on the verandah of the lodge, and lunch or dinner at the cottage.
We have had some late rain, so we go into the dry months looking welcomly green and mowed, instead of the usual dust of this time of the year.
Fond Regards,
Rob and Dawne

Dawne and Rob have done an amazing work! Their guest house is a very welcoming place with comfortable rooms, with a view -- very quiet, but close from everything.
Peaceful, relaxed and beautiful. I'll be back!

Room Tip: All the rooms are nice, evn though room 3 is maybe too close from the car park
