“Booking doesn't mean booked”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2013 via mobile

I recently booked this place for a long weekend. After accepting the booking, they added a 'minimum stay' clause, and without making further contact gave our booking away.
They admit their employee made a mistake but we are the ones out in the cold.
Not happy.

We went away for our annerversary... to get to the hotel was a very long bumpy dirt road... took us about 40 minutes if not more on the dirt road... which made it quite a drive from Jhb... we got there at night, pitch dark for the duration of the dirt road... We arrived there, had supper, very mediocre hotel room... supposed to be a 4 star, more like 2.5 star... The view from the room is decent... food from the restaurant was decent, they tried their best. Unfortunately it rained throughout the week end we were there, which was possibly the worst thing that could of have happened. There is absolutely zero to do there if it rains... there is no cell phone or 3G reception either... and the likelihood of chancing a 40 min muddy dirt road with a car to get out of there and go to a nearby town in slim...

We had a wonderful relaxing weekend with no idee of time. The environment is that of absolute peace and tranquility. This lodge is situated away from the hussel and bussel of the everyday rush an escape from the world. You just dont want to go back to the real world when the weekend is over. The hospitality is that of nothing but elite service. Friendly staff Amanda and Ernst(Managing couple) is unique hosts you are not just a number but a person and they will go out of their way to be helpful and considerate. The overall look of the lodge is excellent and the rooms is beautiful and elegant. The food is great!!! You can do absolutely nothing if you feel like it or go for walks in the beautiful nature on foot, horse back or on the quad bikes the scenerary is breathe taking. Will definitly go back to revive the mind and soul!! Thanks again the experience is great!!!!!

Room Tip: Leopard suite for the couple definitely!

Had a super relaxing weekend with wife and daughter. A place you can really wind down at.
Beautiful scenery. The walking trails are amazing. Will definitely visit again. The only tip is to play open cards about the road conditions. I was told my sedan would handle it but was damn glad I took the Fortuner. Further, stunning place and people.

We were thirty two family members that went to Komati Gorge Lodge for New Year 2012 with our Pets being the main reason we went. The place is in a stunning place, however we were not informed that the sand road was soo bad and it was most unpleasant for my seven month pregnant daughter in law. We were not warned to Frontline our Dogs we had six there, and my littleYorkie got Billary and we had to rush him to a Country Vet on a farm in Machadadorp to save his life. Only one Vet in the whole area. The pictures of the rooms were very deceiving as they are in much need of refurbishment, our bed was a very old wooden bed and very rickety, the cleaning was also not up to standard at all, our floors were not cleaned in all the time we were there, really only beds made. The worst problem we had was Amandas husband who must be the rudest man I have ever met in my life, every time we wanted to Quad Bike or Horse Ride it seemed to be as though he was irritated and did not want to be bothered, obviously they don't need the money, also there is no convenience shop on the premises or for miles around, so if you run out of anything, good luck especially if there is a lot of rain, which we had, you cannot get in or out. We have gone as a family to various places for the past twenty years to spend New Year together we are always around 30 people, don't go there if that's the case as "Customer is King" does not exist at this resort and they could not cope with a full resort at all. We were even told by Amandas husband that our party drank all the alcohol in the bar (really we couldn't believe it surely that is where you make your money and you should be happy) were were supporting the Lodge alternatively don't have a bar at all.
What a beautiful setting with the worst Management unfortunately. I would never recommend it at all. Certainly not worth the money as it was not cheap.

We have decided to comment on this, rather late than never.
This group was so happy with everything until they had to pay the bills...
The organiser of the group told us on new years eve how impressed they were with the place and the service and they wood definitely tell all their friends to visit Komati Gorge.
They were a group of 32 that stayed with us and booked self catering accommodation.
On our booking form that we send to the guests, together with all information about the gravel road and no cell phone reception, we asked them to please book for meals in the restaurant in advance, especially groups. Our lodge is 35km from town so we have to be able to plan ahead. The guest did admit that she did not read through the paperwork that was sent to her and she did not pass it on to any of her group members.
They arrived here with no food which is not a problem, we are always stocked with food and drinks especially over Christmas and New year, but to feed 32 people for 4 days from a 4 star restaurant can get expensive. When they arrived for dinner and saw our menu they decided not to order from the al le carte dinner menu and asked for hamburgers and hotdogs. We offered them braai packs, made side dishes and even barbequed the meat for them inside the restaurant kitchen because it started drizzling. This worked out less expensive and they were happy. We bend over backwards for this group and we love to see that our guests are happy!!
The last night the one guest came into our kitchen and thanked all our staff for the delicious food.
Everything was perfect until they had to pay... it was 4 ladies that came to the office. First there were fighting amongst themselves about the food and bar bill. One of our other guests that stayed in firefly cottage just above reception came to me to find out if I was ok because he heard all the shouting. My husband approached them about this issue and they didn't like it and start fighting with him.
They did go to the vet with their yorkie, but the vet confirmed that it is impossible to show signs of biliary after only 1 day, so it is impossible that the dog contracted the disease at our Lodge.
We have a great team at Komati gorge lodge and the guests comment every weekend how lovely the rooms décor are, how clean the rooms are and how friendly all the staff is.
We have lots of big functions, group birthdays conferences and weddings for 50 - 60 people and are coping very well with big groups. The group of 32 was not too big for us to handle as all our staff work during Christmas and New Year.
We did not have any problem with them drinking from the bar or doing any activities.

If you want relaxation then this is the place for you! Pet friendly and the nicest, friendliest staff as a whole I've come across in a long time. Although the dinner menu is small, the food is great and Ernst and Amanda go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. My husband and I went for a picnic down the river on one of the pedal boats, but there are also canoes available for the braver ones! Even though it is a family destination, not once did it feel like the kids were taking over regarding noise levels and disruption. The rooms are clean and actually look like the pictures in the gallery - quite hard to find! The honeymoon special was fantastic - one of the best parts being able to lounge on the hammock reading a book while watching my husband hard at work at the braai as the rain fell on the trout dam. This is definitely a getaway to be repeated - whether it will be a romantic getaway with my husband, a perfect family trip including my 3 year old son or as a big group with the entire family remains to be seen!

In mid June I made a booking for July. Booking for 2 adults, 2 children & 2 dogs'. In our e-mail correspondence i declared one puppy and a 'large baby sitter'. I was never asked for any further detail from the Lodge about the size, age or breed of dogs. Summary of events, my pup was biten by resident male dog (not serious), on our last day the resident male went for my dane, Amanda admitted own dog grumpy and at fault, Ernst approach my husband and rudely told him to keep our dog locked inside, I approached Amanda and requested that situation rectified as Ernst not been present during incident and i innocently assumed he did not have full set of facts. Amanda then changed her story and denied she saw anything, Ernst approach us at our unit and threated us (infront of 2 children) with physical violence and 'kicking' us out if our dog came out the unit (i decided not to lay a charge with SAPs as not to cause more upset for children) I paid the bill and we left 1st thing the next morning (too late to drive that evening). When i approach amanda to resolve she burst into tears. On top of this our quad trail was 1/2 time (rectified by 1/2 pay) and horse riding 5 hours late.

We have decided to comment on this, rather late than never.
This group booked for 2 adults, 2 kids, 1 baby sitter and 1 puppy.
They arrived here with a Grate Dane (the owners said he was over 90kg) and another small dog.
On our website and pet policy we ask guests to declare dogs.
We have had Grate Danes here before so it was not a issue.
The Grate Dane and resident dog had a fight just outside the office. I was in the office at the time but did not see what happened. Just heard the fight and went outside immediately. The resident dog was bleeding a little bit, but nothing serious.
After a while the Grate Dane was in another fight with another dog, also outside the office.
We decided to talk to the guests and asked them to keep the dog under their control to prevent any more accidents. We are pet friendly and there were lots of other dogs and small children around.
The guests did not like that and the man got in an argument with Ernst. The husband was shouting and swearing at Ernst and his wife had to hold him back because it appeared as if he wanted to assault Ernst. They turned the story around and said Ernst were aggressive towards them. This is not true. This is why they never laid any charges because their story is a lie.
We never said they must lock the dog in the house, we simply asked to keep the dog under their control as it was a very big dog.
They did not leave first thing Sunday morning, but around 9am which is normal check out time.
All our quad trips is 1.5 hours and we have professional guides that do our activities and they are always on time.
