I usually prefer city settings to their rural counterparts but, after one night at Shangri La I felt the burden of urban stress lift off my weight leaden shoulders! The place is most appealing with all the beautiful plants & it strikes one as an eco-friendly haven. The personnel were extremly pleasant, helpful & cheerful & went beyond the call of duty to be of assistance. I would definitely reccomend it to anyone who needs to find themselves again or feel at one with nature!

After having almost 24 hours way from Moscow to Johannesburg, 200 km drive from airport to Modimolle and the last kilometers earth road in the dark, we were so tired and didn't expect to see such wonderfull place. Beautifull green territory, beautifull interior, friendly staff. We came almost to the closing of the kitchen nevertheless we received very good dinner: perfect steak and wine. In the morning we received good breakfast and felt very well and rested. Unfortunately, we had to go on and couldn't stay longer in this nice place.

The management and staff of Shangri-la are really a team that go the extra mile. We had a wonderful experience. The food is good, the place is beautifully decorated, in fact it feels like home. I would recommend Shangri -la and we will definitely go there again.

Room Tip: I dont think this applies, the hotel is quiet, all the rooms seem quite cool and private

We have stayed at Shangri-La Country Hotel on numerous occasions over the recent years. The most recent was on the 20th and 21st of October 2012. All our visits have been most enjoyable and memorable. The staff are well trained, very professional and most courteous. We are always remembered as 'special guests' due to the frequency of our stays and are made to feel like VIPS - best 'honeymoon suite' avaliable, complimentary bottle of wine etc. The staff have always taken care of even the slightest hiccup ( such as one expects in a rural country hotel ) with the utmost professionalism. The accomodation is very comfortable, I especially love the huge fourposter beds. The TV's aren't the latest models with the biggest flattest screens - but as a guest at Shangri-La I have never had the desire for watching telly, it is so peaceful and relaxing, I am always quite content to just sit back, relax and enjoy the sounds and sights of nature - troupes of very playful monkeys frolicking around the beautifully kept gardens on my own small private patio. The meals on offer always send me into a panic as the food is so delicious and the portions so generous that I inevitably gain a couple of kilos. On the downside - do remember that this hotel's speciality is that they cater for weddings - they even have the sweetest wedding chapel on site. So your quiet romantic getaway (especially if it is on a weekend) may be marred by noisy, not all that sober wedding guests. Another is that they cater for large conference groups so be sure to be early or you may not get your preferred breakfast choice. Be a little flexible and you will certainly enjoy the hospitality that Shangri-La offers

Room Tip: I recommend the honeymoon suites. They are quite private, spacious, comfortable and are set well aw...

We recently stayed at Shangri-La. The setting was beautiful, the gardens well-kept. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

The room was rustic but quaint and functional. The TV in the room was a small old fashioned horrible one. Small flat screen TV sets have come down in price. (time for them to upgrade!).

The lounge and formal dining room have been revamped and are very tasteful.
Food in the formal dining room was good but not exceptional. Service was slow,
Breakfast buffet was very good.

My biggest gripe was the incessant wale-song, dolphin music being played throughout the resort. It was just too much. It was very intrusive. The staff were not allowed to change the DSTV DMX music channel.

I have booked a return visit. I just hope that the music has changed.

Dear guest, thank you for posting on Trip Advisor. We are creating a better Shangri-La through our renovations, and having completed our marvellous main building, we have now begun upgrading our rooms, which includes the TV sets, to improve our offering to you. Thank you for bringing the service issues to our attention, we will use this feedback as an opportunity to train our staff and so achieve the levels of service consistently that we are striving for. We will also investigate the background music to ensure that this is not intrusive but calming as intended. We look forward to welcoming you back on your return!

Although I was on a business trip which was very tiring, the homeliness of Shangri-La was refreshining. It was nice on the second day to know that I would be relaxing on a very comfortable bed which I had enjoyed the previous day. When I could not report to the dining hall on time I was offered room service without asking for it, Isn't that great when you are tired. In the morning I woke up to birds that were singing and I also enjoyed the company of the monkeys.

Room Tip: do not open the windows widely in case the monkeys visit you.

Wow! Wow! What a beautiful serene enviroment! We visited Shangri-La for our couples retreat over the weekend (29-30 Sep) and my husband and I loved the place. So did the other couples. The service was more than excellent! The food was devine, especially the full breakfast offered. Jacob who was on duty was very helpful. He took us for a tour around the yard. There was always someone to assist us with even the tiniest things. The pool area, the Kraal, the restaurant, simply beautiful! I will be recommending the place to other people!
