We stayed at Shikwaru Lodge in their luxury tented camp for a few days before Christmas to get some rest and relaxation!

We saw all the wildlife that's on the reserve with exception of buffalo and leopard. So got to see Wildebeest, zebra, red heart, sable, kudu, jackal and my personal favorite the giraffe! We saw something every time we went to base camp!

We chose the full catering option and the lodges chef Conrad who is from Zimbabwe is AWESOME! His food is exceptional and if given a chance I would have packed him in my bag and taken him home!

We did a bush walk with Zulu which was fantastic and also tried our hand at archery and discovered I am pretty good!

We had an awesome time and would go back again.

The tents have inner and outer flaps on all the windows. the outers had no means to keep them open. NOT acceptable. Shower head was missing and the shower had not been cleaned in a long time.
A 4 sleeper with seating for 3 ??? And all units were the same. Meant that somebody had to sit on the floor.
I am recovering from major surgery, but when we got to Watoto, we had to carry everything to our unit ourselves. You should have staff to do that. The lady assigned to our tent helped by carrying one supermarket packet and then disappeared.
Crockery and cutlery was insufficient for 4 people. And NO braai utensils.
The lay-out is not ideal. People like the bush mostly because they want to get away from other people. The only access to the units is to walk right past (almost THROUGH) all units en route. This is NOT conducive to enjoying the peace and SOLITUDE of the bush.
It's small things like this that spoil what would otherwise have been a very nice stay.
If these points of contention are not addressed, we will not be back, nor will we recommend Shikwaru to anybody.
The couple 2 units up from us expressed the same disappointments.
Our neighbours, a couple with a child didn't like the fact that everybody kept walking past them while they were sitting outside the front of their unit, made worse by the fact that their braai facility was almost in the walkway that everybody was using.

The lodge is nicely located and provided the possibility of game view. Rooms are proper and clean, staff is extremely friendly and helpful.

Advise:
1) The restaurant does not serve alcohol (for whatever reason), so bring your own beer, wine etc (they do not contest that).
2) You need a gate code to enter the site from the street (make sure you have this available from the reservation (we struggled a bit to find it at dark)

All in all highly recommended

We have now now been to Watoto twice, we are thinking of making it a biannual trip.

The best thing to do is to book the whole camp for you and your travelling mates. You get get complete privacy, enjoy nature and camp in luxury.

The staff are friendly and go the extra mile for guests. Great retreat.

Wonderful.

2nd time to Shikwaru, planning the 3rd already. Wonderful experience. Whether you're planning a get away, safari, hunt, golfing adventure.... This is the place. If you need something, just ask. The staff goes above and beyond the call to make your stay better than home. You will not be disappointed
