“Great place to stay, despite a poor catering”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2014

We stayed there three nights and we had a lot of pleasure driving around, with a lot of game everywhere. Unfortunately, we are not self-catering people and it was the last week of the restaurant, before the take over by Mugg and Bean. Sad dinners, as almost everything in the menu was not available. But the worse was Satara Rest Camp, as the restaurant was closed and we had just some junk food prepared for "the day visitors"
This needs to improve if they want to keep foreign (and local) visitors happy!

A consolation: Mopane restaurant was great, good food and friendly staff in a beautiful site.

Olifants camp is located high above the Olifants River meandering below. The camp itself is made up mostly of practical and clean self contained bungalows. There's a patio to enjoy breakfast, dinner and a sundowner as you listen to the sounds of the hippos from the river. The bungalows come equipped with a large fridge, private barbecue and air conditioning. The location of Olifants is its best asset, the drives from here pass through a diverse range of geography and wildlife habitat. To the north the country is wooded and undulating as you drive the circuit to Letaba, to the south is flatter open range. Animals abound, elephant, hippo, buck, zebra, kudu, giraffe, rhinoceros, buffalo and hyena. Location, location, location.

We stayed in one of the bungalows with a river view, highly recommended. The built in patio is a nice feature. We had dinner on the patio with the sound of hippos in the background a very unique and memorable experience. The bungalows are a good value. The viewpoint by the restaurant is first rate. The restaurant food is ok, not great..

There was almost no need to explore out of the camp, as almost everything was seen from one's verandah, eagles, vultures rode the wind currents at eye level, while the river below was teaming with all sorts of game, from the cliff top vantage one views an elephant trial that has been used for thousands of years, part of the elephant migratory path is in the valley below you.
You may view a swathe of African bush veld for miles in a 180deg sweep.

The accommodation is very basic but for the price and considering you are staying inside the national park, nothing to really complain about. The bungalow was cleaned daily and also had A/C, braai facilities and a fridge. The camp is very well located and has all the facilities you might need in the park. The viewing deck is a lovely place to catch the sunset over the river.

Epic location with unforgettable views of Olifants River
Nice settings of bungalows and all accommodation
Stunning views from the restaurant
Great wildlife sighting all around

Could do with a bit of a renovation and makeover

Accommodation was basic, but that is exactly what you expect for the price you pay in a national park. River views from some cabins are definitely the better choice as you had great views. Great location to drive straight out and see the animals - we saw 2 lions within 20mins of leaving the gates. Restaurant food basic, but again you don't expect fine dining. Would suggest taking food with you to cook on your own BBQ's that come with each cabin.
