“amazing location, spotting wild life from your balcony”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 9, 2013

these treehouses are definetly one of our highlighs of the south africa tour.
just amazing to stay and sleep under a tree, growing in your house, 7m above the ground.
we enjoyed outdoor showering while watching the wild animals, experienced sunrise side by side of an giraffe, brushing teeth while zebras passing by, feeding monkeys with the fruits, hanging on the trees around you.
we had the mountain view treehouse, with amazing view to the mountains but only from the backdoor balcony to the waterhole, where the animals resting. as we learned, all houses are very different, but they provide a large amount of pictures on their webside.
sometimes hazzles with the water supply, but guys, come one, you are in the middle of the bush and some of all.in.holidayers using water like home, you get in this trouble,
breakfast was ok, dinner was OK but not amazing, expecially the zeremony around the dinner is not my favorite one but, everone is different.
staff is average friendly, but sum up, brilliant location, exeptional treehouses, good game view, and definetly a highlight on our tour.

We just returned from a one week stay on Pezulu. It was our 4. visit and it was great. The treehouses are gorgeous and all the staff is very, very friendly and polite. The owners Lydia and Claude make us feel like in a familiy. Food was great and we enjoyed eating in the Boma. If you like bush and nature Pezulu is a must. It is not life in town but if you go in the bush in Africa you must know this. It is perfect to relax, hear the voice of the bush and to calm down from the busy life in Europe. Let your soul be your soul and then you will love Pezulu. We certainly will return.

This is now the 4th time for us at Pezulu and our boys, 7 and 5 just cant get enough of the tree houses. Its 3 stars in accommodation and you get exactly that. The tree houses make it unique however and a one of a kind experience. Its a real authentic bush experience and the situation has a great view of the mountain range nearby. The tree houses are made from local materials and each one has a different flavour....We stayed in tree houses closer to the ground like Bushwillow and Marula due to the kids....but Honeymoon and Mountainview are truly spectacular. The food is very simple home-cooked fare served around the boma at night - and Lydia and Claude - the owners always make you feel welcome and at home. We are treated really as friends having been a few times and they always do their best to make our kids feel welcome - which most lodges fail miserably at. Having a bath in the trees - surrounded by that view is something not to be missed...

Room Tip: If you have smaller kids ask for advice to be in a tree house closer to the ground.

I read through some of the previous reviews of Pezulu before we stayed, and was kind of worried, however after staying there I would recommend it to others as a comfortable place to stay if you want to take a few safaris while there. Many of the reviews appear to have been written before they remodeled many of the houses, and the staff each year rotates so a bad experience with staff one year may not carry over to the next.

We stayed in they honeymoon tree house, which was good sized for two people, but also had room for another person near the door on a twin sized bed. It faces one of the private game reserves, so at night you can hear the call of buffalo, and hear other animals in the distance too. It is safe to walk at night here because they do not have lions, rhino, hippos or elephants in this reserve. But, don't be surprised if you get up early in the morning and get spooked by giraffe or zebra or other animals that are freely roaming. There was also a small family of bush babies that lived just above the deck in the honeymoon suite, so if you go out an hour or two before sunset you may be able to see them poking their heads out to see you before vanishing in to the darkness.

As far as the suite we stayed in, it didn't have heat or AC, but we didn't expect that. And there are small gaps between the floorboards (not large enough for an earring to drop through even), so you will get some air circulation throughout the day or night. For the winter nights there are small space heaters if needed, and extra blankets, and for the summer there is a fan directly above the bed. There was a problem with the door locks on our room doors which was fixed promptly upon request but probably had been an ongoing issue for a while.

The tub in this room was in a really cool place, so you could look out in to the surrounding bush and over the watering hole with the windows at tub level. We enjoyed sitting with a bottle of wine for part of an afternoon in the tub and sun while watching for animals to drink from the watering hole.

The cleaning people could have done a little bit better job, as there was a dead bug in the bathroom that was there all 4 days that we stayed, and some dust bunnies in the corners. It wasn't dirty, just wasn't up to how we keep our own home. The maid service basically empties the trash and makes the bed as far as I could tell each day, and only spent 10-15 minutes in our cabin one morning when we ate a quick breakfast and came back.

The staff was very friendly overall from the cooks to the drivers. They were always willing to help, and give us more information on local sightseeing, animals, etc.

The food was decent but not to the level that I would have expected for the price per person. Breakfast was excellent usually. The tea lunch was filling if you were there mid-day. But the dinner I would have expected to be the capstone of the day, and could be improved. The staff was a little pushy with drinks at dinner each night, and just having all of the staff around for dinner was a few too many people. The dinners were good, but rather than having a buffet like other nearby lodges offer it was a handful of dishes that were offered. Out of everything we experienced, most of which was good, I think that the meals could be the biggest area of improvement for this lodge.

Your drinks are not included, so be sure to take that in to account when planning a trip. We didn't expect for the drinks to be included, but it wasn't really stated anywhere this was an additional cost until we arrived. We did get charged for a few bottles of water at dinner which should be included in the price.

Overall, we would definitely recommend Pezulu as a place to stay, and think they rooms here are probably the coolest around. However, with a little bit more attention to detail they could be put in that next tier of service overall. Hopefully a few suggestions from this review will be read and implemented.

Room Tip: We liked the honeymoon suite because it sits back from the road a little further, and is a little mo...

This is probably the most unique place i've stayed in. We stayed in the family tree room with a family of five (2 adults, 2 kids and 1 baby). The room layout was practical and modern. A big plus is the safe in the room. It also came with an outside shower. Basically a shower room with one wall opened up from chestheight upwards. The views from the room or the balcony are nice. The sunsets are stunning and so are the nights, you can see so many stars. We've not seen animals at our house but we did encounter zebra's and giraffe on the grounds of Pezulu. The access roads to Pezulu are very poor, they go from tarmac to 'washboards' to straight offroad. In the 'dry' winter you can probably do it with standard rental but in the wet summer i would go for a higher clearance 2x4 or even better 4x4 vehicle. At night it's difficult to navigate these roads. The closest gate to the kruger park is about 45 min away. Besides the tree houses pezulu has a central house and a bar called the waterhole. It's located on the first floor and it has a good seating area. I liked the swining chairs. A elevated walkway connects the waterhole to a viewpoint. From this viewpoint above the treeline (where you can also sit comfotably) you can see the sun go down or come up, it's a stunning view. The central facility also acts as a breakfast area. Breakfast is basic but with a good enough selection. Next to the central building it is the booma where in the evening dinner is servered around a campfire. It's a nice oppertunity to connect with the othter guests. When we were there it was a mix of French, German, Dutch and South african people. Being Dutch is regret to say that another dutch family acted quite condescending towards the staff. (but that can happen in any place). The hosts Claude and Shauwn tried hard to make everybody feel comfortable and welcome and the staff is friendly. We all liked the food at dinner and breakfast so no complaints there. Some minor things i do want to mentions. They do not have high chairs for the little people and the waterhole on the first floor does have a fence but the holes are big enough for the little kids to fall through. Also the lock on our treehouse was quite tempramental. And you need to make sure you lock (not just close - but lock) the doors when you leave otherwise the monkeys might get into your room. Overall we really liked this place and we recommend it.

Room Tip: If you travel with a bigger group you can opt for the family tree. It's two seperate houses with...

Staying overnight in a unique treehouse is a very novel experiece! Well worth it, in my view. You're not quite "roughing it" because the amenities are very nice, and the beds very comfortable.

We stayed in Mountain view, the highest of the treehouses. Fantastic! You're in a game reserve, so there are animals all around - nothing that dangerous, of course. This is not a big 5 reserve.

PROS
1. Fantastic experience - living in a tree! How can you top that for uniqueness?!!
2. Everything is privided. Fully self-contained, plenty of hot water for showers, lovely porches for sitting and looking over the veld....
3. Breakfast and dinner are included over at the main lodge building. Plenty of food. Dinner is served in a "boma" area around a large fire. The main course is buffet style.
4. Animals can come right up to your treehouse and eat from the vegetation right there. We had a herd of 7 giraffe eating from the trees all around our unit in the morning. We sat on our balcony/porch and enjoyed th sight while having our coffee.
5. We had our first experience showering outside under the stars - and up in a tree! How cool! I had noticed an earlier review where someone actually complained about monkeys in the tree while they were showering. This is Africa!! It's a game reserve!! What would you expect?! Send the monkeys over to me!! I'd be happy to have them in my tree while I'm there - yes, even while I'm showering!

From our unit, we also saw a genet that came right up onto our porch, warthogs, zebra, grey duiker and bushbuck.

CONS
1. Beware the road that takes you to the reserve! I've travelled many thousands of miles of dirt roads in Africa, but this one had the worst washboarding I'd ever seen. Not bad for rocks or ruts - justc terrible washboarding. Too bad they couldn't finish tarring it to the reserve.
2. Staying in a real tree is novel, but watch your head! We all came away with bumps on our heads from hitting various branches in the rooms. VERY COOL idea and experiece - just be aware of the branches.
3. The breakfast area is not very imaginitive. The food is great, but given th embience of the tree houses, I would have thought that the breakfast area would have refelcted more of a safari theme. We noticed that the gift shop was closed due to construction, so perhaps the rest of the area might be undergoing a change as well?
4. Beware the ramps if there's dew on them! They're very slippery!

In any event... in my view, this experience is a must! It's NOT a Hampton Inn by any stretch. But then, I wasn't expecting that, either. Let my photos tell you a bit more....
