“Relaxed place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2009

After a good experience 3 years ago, we returned to the Blyde River Canyon Lodge. This time we stayed for one night after our flight(s) from Europe to relax before going onto safari. This lodge is a gorgeous place to relax for a few days and to visit the Blyde River Canyon. The terrace and swimming pool have a view on the beautiful garden with impalas (including Mala the house-impala), zebras and baboons. The staff was very friendly and gave a complementary upgrade to the honeymoon suite. Although the rooms are a somewhat outdated, they are clean and elegantly decorated. The dinner was delicious with a very good value for money.

We absolutely enjoyed our 4 night stay at the Blyde River Canyon Lodge. It is not the easiest to find but once you arrive, you can be assured you will have all the comforts of a cozy, family run lodge with excellent facilities, food, staff and accessibility to all the sites of the area.

The lodge itself is very rustic but has all the comforts of a four-star lodging with a nicely designed pool area, warm sitting area where you can read by the fire place, beautiful freakfast deck with views of the canyons and simple but cozy rooms. The place almost has a magical feel - on our first night as we arrived back for dinner, four graceful zebras waltzed right through the main grass area past our rooms. Then the following morning as we were having breakfast, a single deer was sitting just a few feet away resting and enjoying the sun.

The staff is incredibly attentive and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast - simple but well done with great coffee. They had the most amazing home baked croissants! Most of all, the dinner was a highlight. There was one menu offered but always with local fresh ingredients and the chef really made an effort in taste and presentation. The staff also allowed us to bring our own wine that we had purchased in the Winelands to enjoy.

From the lodge, you are 40 minutes from the Orpen Gate of Kruger National Park where we spend some really enjoyable hours seeing the animals - an absolute highlight of the our South Africa trip. You are also right next to the larget animal rehabilitation center in South Africa - the Moholoholo Rehabiliation Center where you can learn about the various animals in the areas, issues / conflicts with human development and what they are doing to ease the challenges. You also have easy access to the Panorama Route where you can drive and stop at various sites along the Canyon edge.

We only had four nights but in the end, if we had known in advance what a wonderful place this was (so quiet, relaxing and so much to do) we could have stayed for a week. We look forward to our return!

Visited this hotel on the recommendation of the tourist info in Hoedspruit, for one night during a month in ZA. Gorgeous setting down in the canyon, wonderful African decor, great food, VERY nice service (thank you Portia and Linke) and beautiful gardens. When we arrived there was an impala by the bar, a wildebeeste or two visible from the viewing deck and baboons on the lawn. After dinner the zebra had come up to the lawn - and they approached us to "say hello"! For the really fussy people out there, it's not exactly a perfect five stars in terms of international standards, but to not to give it five stars here is to quibble needlessly, because in terms of ambience, friendliness, generally very high standards, and VALUE for money, it is really fantastic. The next day we drove down the western side of the canyon but the views were so-so because of the weather. What we would recommend is to take the boat trip on the dam lake, from where we got some amazing views of the Three Rondavels and found an excellent "boat host" in the form of Heinie (spelling?). Please note, I ticked the internet as being free - that's because at ZAR 20 (USD 3) for the duration of your stay, it practically is free!
