“A hidden jewel high in the Spoutensberg”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2010

The track to the Venda Village is a 4x4 1st gear journey high into the Spoutensberg mountains. If this concerns you they will happily pick you up from the bottom where there is secure parking. The ride is breathtaking and arrival is non the less spectacular. A Venda village has been recreated on the foundations of an earlier settlement. The little Rondevals with their thatched rooves nestle side by side in a traditional manner although the mod cons are luxury beyond the dreams of its original inhabitants. The private suites are sumptious but all has been done with a strictly careful eye on the environment and green credentials, The staff were so friendly and accommodating we felt at home at once. Lukas cooks up a storm with a good eye for modern cooking. John and Gill with their family Peter, Cath and the girls were friends in an instant.... Peter and the girls introduced me to their extended family.... the nooiterdachter horses that run in the valley. We had a stunning ride out one evening, highly reccommended! Walking freely in the valley we were able to get very close to the game and the botany and birdlife astounded us.... relaxing on the verandah in your own plunge pool or strolling to the natural bathing spot in the fresh water springs there is no need for a chlorine dip in a blue pond... its much much more than that. A lost world indeed, one might have expected to see a jurassic park inhabitant stroll casually across. I cannot reccommend this highly enough from every aspect

A magical place to stay- the Venda village is so different from any other lodge or hotel we stayed in- the art work and sculptures alone would be worth the trip. The food was truly excellent , the staff made us feel part of the family and the lack of dangerous animals in the conservancy meant we could walk along the tracks unaccompanied. A great spot for nature lovers, walkers, horse riders and anyone who wants a couple of days away from it all.

Staying at Lesheba Wilderness, high up in the Southpansberg Mountains is a magical experience. The village, which used to house a local Venda tribe, has been lovingly restored and decorated by acclaimed Venda artist Noria Mabasa and reflects the mystical spirit of her people.

Located in a private nature reserve, stocked with a variety of African game, this is an absolute haven of peace, tranquility and spirituality. Those who are looking for activities need not look far either, with hiking trails, horse riding and gamedrives available in the reserve.

The food is lovingly homecooked by the wonderful manager Joyce (who was coincidentally born in the village when it was still inhabitated by her tribe!) and her staff, who will make sure you are short of nothing during your stay.

This is a place to experience magical South African culture and nature, recharge your batteries and soothe your soul!

  • Liked — The magic that surrounded you in this authentic Venda village
  • Disliked — That I had to leave so soon
