“Very good traditional hospitality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 3, 2013

Within walking distance of the small town of Underberg, the Pile-Inn lies is in a quiet back street set in a well maintained fenced garden. Our ensuite room was light, airy and spacious with delightful touches of Africa everywhere. Willy and Caroline were warmly welcoming but not "in your face". Their breakfast was sumptuous and served on the shady front verandah. Son-in-law Rudi was very helpful with tour tips and on learning we were keen to bird spot around and up the Sani Pass into Lesotho, he organized for local bird expert, Stuart McLean, to guide us - and Rudi himself is an experienced guide. Our day of bird watching with the incredibly knowledgeable and interesting Stuart Mclean was one of the highlights of our 3 month tour of Sothern Africa.

We stayed here as a stop over to Umngazi. The owners were friendly and the rooms pleasant. Negatives were a steep flight of stairs (a worry with the kids) and a strong smell of cigarette smoke in the communal areas. Fine as a stop over but not sure I would stay longer with the kids. Great location for Sani to sea riders.

We found this very beautifull little hotel when we arrived in Underberg. New owners were really friendly, treated us as part of their family. Caroline made sure we had everything we needed and her son in law gave us very important information about the treaks to do in the surroundings, specially to go to Sani Pass. The rooms were very cozy, clean and comfortable. Free coffee and tea in the rooms, always appreciated after a treak. Breakfast was delicious. We highly recommend this place.

We were traveling in the Drakensberg during the school holidays in October, and the first place we stayed confused our reservation for the 2nd night of our trip. Fortunately, we found rooms at Pile Inn. It was incredibly comfy--the beds were soft and I especially enjoyed the complimentary coffee and tea in the room. We were planning on getting up really early for a hike the next morning, and Lucia made us pack-breakfasts that were large enough that they actually also served as lunches! Highly recommended.

We made a last-minute reservation here when our original plan fell through. We didn't know what to expect, as we didn't have internet access to see photos & reviews. We were so pleasantly surprised when we arrived! The rooms were very cozy, clean, comfortable, and comparatively much more luxurious than the other places we had stayed (backpacker lodgings). This was perfect for a shower & good night's sleep after a long day of travelling! We were so glad to have found this place to stay and to have received such a warm welcome there.

I stayed at the Pile Inn for two nights - one at each end of my hike in the Drakensberg Mountains. Lucia is a great hostess and serves a first class brekkie, but unfortunately for us travellers she is moving on to something different. Hopefully the new host(es) will be equally good. The rooms are basic but nice (as a B&B should be) and the view from the veranda is very good. It was also really nice to be able to store some of my backback there was away hiking.
