“Fantastic B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2008

This is a fantastic little B&B where you can really make yourself at home. We had a lovely double room with an amazing bathroom. Breakfast is served on the patio overlooking the pool. It's a bit of a walk from the town centre but taxis are very cheap so it's not a problem. Jack and Mark are excellent hosts and recommended two great restaurants the two nights we were there (Kashmir and Olive and Oil). They also have a ginormous dog called Gus who is really friendly and makes you feel very welcome!

Had a fantastic stay at the manaar guest house. Jack and Mark made us feel so welcome and felt at home as soon as we arrived. We had a room and my parents stayed in one of the apartments which were both finished off to spectacular standards. Breakfast was outside beside the pool each morning and very good it was too! We decided to stay there rather than one of the larger hotels because its nicer to receive a personal touch and be looked after. We were not dissapointed! Look forward to staying there again, miss you Jack and Mark! The beach is an easy 15 minutes walk and the centre can be reached by a 5 min car drive or a taxi which are very cheap to use. Eating out we went to Olive & Oil and the Thai restuarant. We also liked the Europa bar.

This was just an overnight stay on our way to St Lucia...didn't want to stay in Durban so booked this based on the feedback from this site.

We were only sorry that the stay hadn't been for longer, from the welcome from Jack & Mark, the location, the rooms, everything was perfect.

Will definately recommend to others & hopefully will return one day.

What a delightful experience! We wanted a place near but not in Durban and didn't care whether it was on the beach or not. I chose it based on the reviews and the fact that they had a very large self-catering apartment that would hold four people. The apartment was two floors, with a complete kitchen and upstairs was a king-sized bed and two twins that could be separated into a separate bedroom. It was all very comfortable.

What made it special was the hosts- Mark and Jack who couldn't have been more helpful and gracious. We opted to pay extra for breakfast and it was served buffet-style by the lovely patio and pool. We delighted in watching the birds feeding next to us. The house is very comfortable and Mark and Jack made us very welcome. They provided maps, suggestions and advice. Secure parking is available. They suggested restaurants in "downtown" Umhlanga Rocks that were terrific.

If I ever have the chance to return to South Africa it will be on my list.

  • Liked — very comfortable house, fabulous hosts
  • Disliked — European-style washer and dryer- couldn't quite get them to work right

Absolutely fantastic- Jack and Mark are helpful, welcoming and always there to provide a much needed glass of wine!!!

Rooms are comfortable and well decorated and the bathroom is fantastic. Breakfast next to the pool was very tasty and varied.

Will most definately be going back as this was without doubt the most relaxed and inviting place I've stayed in, The poolside sofa's are perfect to relax in after a hard days shopping!! (Gateway is very close and those shops are very hard to resist)!!!

And how can I fail to mention Gus, the biggest and friendliest dog I've ever met! Was my very special friend.

Thanks guys!!

We loved Manaar House. The hosts Jack and Mark went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and comfortable.

We stayed in the self catering unit which was spotless and very tastefully furnished, open plan with a beautiful bathroom and lovely private patio area off the bedroom area.

The main house and pool area is beautifully arranged so that guests can enjoy this space - it was lovely to sit in a big comfy couch by the pool and relax with the newspaper or take a dip in the pool when we returned after a day on the beach.

We spent our last night in one of the b and b suites - a lovely big bathroom, small kitchen area with fridge etc and private patio area. Our breakfast by the pool watching the birds was such a pleasure before our long flight home. We highly recommend this wonderful gem of a place Manaar House.

Spacious, stylish room that had recently been renovated, with air con. Nice hosts that gave us good travel info, and breakfast was nice. Outdoors compound pretty small. We were not aware before arriving how big Umhlanga actually is (like a big suburb to Durban) so we had expected the b&b to be closer to the beach. The map on their web page is just showing major roads, not showing all the smaller roads you cross in between the place and the beach, making it look like it's just a block away. Manaar house was in a residencial area, so there weren't a lot of shops, restaurants etc right by. You did wind up using car/taxi for such things. It is also not so close to the big Gateway shopping center - several kilometers away. Would recommend the place because of the nice rooms and hosts.
