We had the most wonderful stay in Teremok. I should actually tell other people about this, because when we wanted to return they were fully booked and we had to book somewhere else which was very disappointing. The breakfast is different every morning, the managers are wonderful, I cannot fault them on anything. We had the Vladikow room which I think is the best room in the house. We will return definitely and can recommend to anyone.
We went on honeymoon, and have to say this is one of the nicest places we have ever stayed in. We recommend the Durban View suite.
The staff (especially Stanley) were marvellous - we came home from dinner one night to find Stanley had covered the floor of our room with tea lights and rose petals...along with a bottle of champagne on ice!
Each morning, a copy of the daily weather forecast was popped under our door and the breakfasts were amazing.
The downside to the stay was the area.
It's not safe to wander around at night, but we were transported to and from restaurants, which took the fun out of exploring.
If you want a chilled night out, then Butcher Boys was great fun, for a more upmarket affair Ile de Maurice was probably the best place we found.
The other drawback was the view from our suite...unless you're a fan of Oil tankers, expect to see over 20 of them queued out at sea waiting to get into Durban harbour.
Overall, venue was amazing...Uhmlanga Rocks, not so great.
Couldn't find this place in the list of hotels\inns but had to share our experience.
My wife found this place on the net and we booked it for a 2 night break in Umhlanga while visiting family in Capetown (1.5 hour flight). It is easily one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in (and there have been many!)
The lodge is situated on a quiet street 2 mins walk from the beach in Umhlanga. It has 12 suites, each individually themed, a small dining room, an honesty bar and a pool and gym in the grounds. It is a 10 min walk to the local shops and restaurants and a 10 min cab drive to the HUGE mall nearby.
We were picked up from Durban airport by one of the managers and driven the 40 mins to the lodge (with friendly chat all the way!) We were seated in reception and checked in over a drink. We were then given a tour of the lodge and shown to the room. Our room ("Palm Suite") had an african theme (specifically booked) which influenced everything in the room. The decor was unique, a custom made CD was playing in the DVD player and even the bespoke toiletries are unique to each room. The room had a huge, luxurious bed, an open plan bathroom with a free standing bath (with candles) and large shower cubicle, TV, DVD and a large patio with table and chairs with stairs down to the pool (which doubled as an external entrance to the room). The staff even slipped a weather forecast under your door each morning!
The service was second to none. The staff were relaxed and friendly and really helped to create the "home away from home" atmosphere. There was a well stocked honesty bar (and free sherry/port/nibbles in the evening), a free DVD\CD library and plenty of free books\magazines. There were even binoculars and wildlife books you could use. The dining room had an open kitchen where you could watch the delicious breakfast being made (only B&B here) and during the day there were always some freshly made bakeries sitting out to help yourself to. If you were heading out, the manager insisted that we let her know so that they could give us a lift if at all possible. If not, they were happy to book us a cab. The manager also organised us massages in our room on the second day which was fantastic.
To end the trip we were driven back to the airport by the owner, who was just as friendly as everyone else we had met at Teremok. We would definately return here if we were back in that area.
