“we miss the old charm and understatement of the old hotel this one is all too contrived”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2010

the bedrooms and the swimming pool is the best bit of this hotel. teh bedrooms are comfortable and very attractively and appropriately decorated in marine blue and white.however, the decoration of the main body of the hotel is really clashing and vulgar. the the bar area is as phoney as you could get with its monstrous glass floor looking down to a dining room table?? whats that all about? and the tea lobby and the breakfast rooms should be avoided at all costs after a heavy night because the frenzy of trellis, patterned materials and colours accelerate the headache! . far from being relaxed understated boutique hotel by the sea its over contrived city style hotel. who ever did the decor should be shot . such a unique sea side location perched on the cliffs should be allowed to speak for itsself.
the staff are all delightful although over trained to a point where they become a bit in your face. and the maids look hysterical in their odd outfits with pearls on the top.

with some ease on the decor (including those mafia-italian urns removed from the bottom of the elegant staircase i can see that this could become a lovely hotel . it is a unique location and should be treated as one. i would recommend this to a friend as an overnight stay but not for a week destination because its tortured decor does not create a relaxing atmosphere.
the owners should be told that less is more!!!

The staff was excellent and very accommodating. Full buffet breakfast had everything. Breathtaking views from the rooms, rocky beach, lighthouse, running path. I would love to go back...

My Wife and i were fortunate to stay in the Oyster Box hotel for 3 nights recently and can honestly say that there was very little that could be changed in this hotel to make your experience any better.
From the moment we arrived and were greeted by smile and welcomes along with cold towels and a variety of welcome drinks on offer, we were then given a tour of the hotel by the reception clerk whilst our bags were making thier way to our room.
The room was excellent, not the biggest i've stayed in but first class for views of the sea and lighthouse and also its fixtures and fittings.
The food and drink at the hotel could not be faulted, we ate both in the 'Grill Room' which is one of the best meals and service we've had on this trip and also in the Ocean terrace which offers a wide selection of seafood and an excellent 'curry' buffet. Pricing for food and drink in the hotel is very reasonable when compared with other 4-5 star establishments both in SA and others.
The facilities in the hotel again could not be bettered, the pools were excellent with the added little touches such as free ice creams, cold towels, water etc all provided. The hotel also has its own small cinema which you can use to view dvd's, authentic, with sweets and popcorn thrown in, how lovely.

Somewhere i would certainly reccomend and will be vising again.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 days after travelling around South Africa for a few weeks and we were absolutely delighted. From the first moment we arrived at the hotel we had an incredible experience. We had a sea facing room that wasn't huge but decorated beautifully and had an amazing balcony with gorgeous view.

We were there over Easter and the hotel was really in the spirit of things with Easter Eggs and Hot Cross buns. Overall we found the food to be first class - especially the buffet breakfasts which are something we are still talking about. The curry buffet (lunch on dinner) was also really nice.

We thought it was the little extras that made The Oyster Box really special. One night we felt like staying in and watching a DVD. We got a DVD from reception and they brought us up pop corn to eat during the movie. They also brought around ice creams while we were sitting by the beautiful pool.

The hotel has been refurbished and is absolutely gorgeous - we would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a really special experience.

This hotel is enough reason to make a trip to Durban out of your way. True this hotel has always been an icon but the fabulous and sympathetic renovations have embraced and heighten everything good about this hotel.

The rooms are very well appointed. The staff can not be faulted. They go beyond expectations in every way. This includes the security staff there to ensure the safety of every guest.

We enjoyed various meals in the in-house restaurants and would recommend the oysters (apparently from the Hotel's own oyster beds) and the curry buffet.

The spa is heaven and should NOT be missed!

I could not recommend the hotel, the staff and the management to any other traveler highly enough (unless of course you are after a sterile, characterless establishment with food that you could find in any airport lounge!)

I have been a regular visitor to the Oyster Box hotel for many years. I always loved the ambiance and the quaint character of the hotel. I paid a visit last week as it has always been a hotel close to my heart. I was thrilled to see that with the upgrade the feeling of the original hotel was not entirely lost. I was overwhelmed by how beautiful the decor had been done. All the beautiful colours and fabrics were amazing. I also found the service and the staff friendly and attentive. The rooms have been renovated amazingly and are very comfortable and spacious. It was a wonderful experience and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my stay. I also visited the spa and found it true five star treatment! I would advise anyone staying at the hotel to visit the spa. I also found Wayne Coetze the general manager very courteous and attentive. I loved my visit and would definitely go there again!
