“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 27, 2011

My wife and I spent three nights recently at the Oyster Box and had an excellent time there. The weather was rainy/cool, so no pool, but everything else was top notch. We had a sea facing room. And, yes, it was smaller than we expected but very nice and clean. Listening to the sea after spending months in the Arizona desert is a treat.

We had dinner one night at the Grill Room and the food was very good and the staff attentive but not overbearing. Excellent wine list, very extensive. The food was very good. Since it was my wife's birthday, they provided us with a speciality dessert at no charge.

The next night we eat in the Ocean Terrance restaurant. It too was good and less expensive than the Grill Room. The wine list was not as extensive but we found an excellent bottle of chardonnay. Breakfast was buffet and had everything you could want, including oysters. They have the best sticky buns I have had in years.

Too chilly to sit outside by the pool, so we took advantage of the free shuttle to the Gateway Mall. Supposedly the largest mall in southern Africa. Some nice restaurants there and lots of speciality shops. No large American style department store.

Check in and check out was painless. The staff appear to enjoy their jobs and do it well.

I would definitely recommend the Oyster Box but remember it is on the pricy side.

Room Tip: Non-sea facing rooms are less expensive.

This hotel is in a league of its own!! We celebrated our anniversary with a stay at the Oyster box and it was lovely.

We started off with a spa treatment, the Hamman Oyster box treatment, the spa staff was extremely professional and we were treated like royalty. The spa is beautiful and very palatial! Be sure to book your treatment quite early so that you have the plunge pool and all the facilities to yourself.

From check in to departure the hotel was 5 star!! The warm South African smiles, the service, our lovely room, the view, the food, everything. Small details including the morning paper that is delivered to your room, to oysters at the breakfast buffet, a stunning turndown at night, sunscreen at the pool deck, nothing seems to be too much trouble.

Will definitely return!

Room Tip: Sea view deluxe is worth the upgrade!

The Oyster Box gets better and better every year .. food as delicious as ever and the service remarkably good .. in particular S'bu on the front desk went out of his way to help and even escorted me to find an ATM machine when I needed to get USD for a trip to Zimbabwe.

I cannot fault the hotel and it is lovely to return every year. I could not recommend it more - staying here is a real treat and you leave feeling refreshed and thoroughly spoilt.

Outstanding.

Stayed here for a few nights and it is a beautiful hotel with amazing service! Love the decor and area. We stayed in a loft room- absolutely gorgeous! There are nice touches, like cinema for rainy days, free stuff for your kids etc. Only downside is the food- it was SO expensive (like R90 for a sandwich!), and sometimes food was good and other times a R80 salad would come with no dressing and few ingredients. I would order from the kiddies menu, as the portions are also so huge! I would rather eat a smaller amount and pay less for quality food. High tea OK- very pricey for what you get-West Cliff high tea much better!

Also-they have an excellent shuttle service, you pay for the pick up from the airport but to restuarants and activities nearby it's free andthe drivers are excellent!

Excellent in every department. Wonderful friendly service from all the staff who make you feel at home straight away. Unlike some 5 star establishments, the Oyster Box is not at all stuffy. Just a very comfortable place to relax, enjoy the well appointed rooms and the food, etc.
Highly recommended.

...so definitely good enough for us lesser mortals!
It is my regular stop over when on the KwaZulu North coast, multiple times per month.

It has all the ingredients to be a home away from home...well a little more luxurious then home...
It has grace, location, old colonial style and personalized service.
...and the best curry in town1

You will remember this place and they do remember you...like they have been waiting for your return!

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are definitely the better option

Having experienced the Royal Hotel on arrival in South Africa we had no wish to return there, so we transferred to the Oyster Box.
It is lovely - beautiful location, friendly staff, great spa, great food.
What more can I say.
