“Nice hotel in Umhlanga”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2011

There's a "Now open" sign outside the hotel, so it's almost brand new, and it shows. No frills, but modern and comfortable rooms, which is the norm at Holiday Inn Express hotels. This one, however, has a nice little outdoor swimming-pool, which was unfortunately out of order during my stay.

I got a seaview room, but I wish I had got one of the two rooms that have a terrace in every floor. They must be great, but even as a platinum member of Priority Club, and the hotel not being full at all, I wasn't offered any of them.

I just spent 12 hours at the hotel and didn't explore Umhlanga, which looks quite nice from the distance, but apart from a nearby shopping centre, it's in the middle of nowhere, only convenient for the motorway. But it's a good hotel anyway.

We had a sea facing room on the 4th floor. The room was clean and had all the design features in for a modern hotel room. The bedding was clean and a choice of 2 types of pillows. The view of unhlanga and the sea was lovely. One must ask for a seaview with booking. To book on the Internet was R 100 cheaper than phoning the Hotel. Please note you have to pay R40 per day extra if you want your car in the security under roof parking (which I would suggest). The room has a large shower.
Breakfast is included in the price and it is per ROOM one pays -so 1 or 2 people- same price. The breakfast was very nice having basic cereals, juices, breads, scrambled eggs, sausages and fruit.
The restaurant on the premises "Butchers block" serves dinner and was expensive. If one does not book- you get a terrible table (behind a pillar). Ask for a sea facing table! They half filled your wine glass if you buy wine by the glass and the 300 g staek is more 100 g.
The staff at the Hotel was so friendly and helpful- a real pleasure.

We got into the new and efficient Shaka International Airport. Rented our car and went to the tourist office. Since I had won a promotion for a 50% off stay at any of the other Holiday Inn Express in South Africa we drove to Ushmlanga and stayed instead of driving on to Durban. The hotel is very similar to the one in Cape Town. The rooms are small but very well thought out and efficient. Nice TV, hair dryer, bright white new towels, kettle, body gel, conditioner shampoo and soap, plenty of light, which is a problem in most hotels. We got a great view of the ocean and one day woke up early enough to see a very nice sun rise. The internet did not work in our room but we could go to the lobby, is not free, 60 rand an hour. The beach is about a Kilometer from the hotel and there is a huge shopping mall also about a Kilometer away. The buffet breakfast has every thing, eggs, bacon, ham, cheese, yogurt, cereals, sweet breads, fruit, cappuccino machine, etc. It also had a very nice restaurant were we had dinner 2 of the nights as we came back too tired to go out. The service is very good and not too expensive for a hotel depending on what you eat. The hotel reception staff was very welcoming and friendly. We had picked up a flyer at the tourist office for Touristo Tours 27 31 303 2766 www.touristotours and decided to go on a tour to Shakaland, we were expecting to go with a group of people but were picked up instead by Manfred in a midsize car. He told us about Durban and South Africa as he drove us there. It is a made up place for a movie set but it is actually pretty informative and they had a very good show. A fairly good lunch was included. We also did a 2 day tour to Giant’s Castle world heritage site and the Sani Pass and Lesotho with Manfred and stayed overnight in Himeville, while our car and hotel sat there! We could have done it ourselves but my husband needed a driving break. Except for the Sani Pass, you need a 4 X 4 which you can arrange in Himeville. The views are spectacular and we had the extra bonus of a light snow which made it even better. Unfortunately we also had a lot of rain in between some perfect breaks when we actually had to go out and about. Good thing we had our good long strong rain coats!

During the World Cup my wife and myself stayed at this great hotel. The staff was always extremely helpful even during the most busiest times. When possible the staff tried to help you even more than what you have asked for. The rooms are very nice and the location is excellent for the nearby shopping mall with lot´s of good restaurants. We really recommend this place

This hotel is great for business travel. It is close to Durban and right next door to the Umhlanga Ridge business centre and Gateway shopping mall. The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable. Breakfast is served on the first floor with a great view and a patio over looking the ocean. You can visit the in-house resturant for a great meal or order room service.
There is also a small pool for leisure travellers.
The service I received was excellent - when I asked for the location of the ice machines, a large bucket of ice was brought to me without hesitation.
The rate is per room and can accommodate 2 adults and 2 small children on a sleeper couch so this is great value for a family.

I went to Durban with my father during the world cup, to see Brasil x Portugal. We choose to stay in Umhlanga that's really an amazing place with beautifull beaches.

We didn't expect no excepcional service from Holliday Inn chain, but we should never expect an disaster like our stay .

Despite it's an brand new hotel with nice rooms(compared to similar categories of hotel) , we suffered with the worst level of service, we've got in South Africa.

The check in was confusing, the staff looks not to care about the guests(the only exception was one of the doormans). When we complain about any situation nobody takes responsibility (it was always other people error, but this one wasn't there...)

Problems to get an remote control to the room....

And as it was world cup, they're charging Leading Hotels rates, but forget the services...

I'll never get back there and probably will keep avoid this poor service chains everytime I 've an option

I went to South Africa to watch England in the World Cup. Unfortunately England were rubbish so all our plans had to change and we decided to take a trip down to Durban for a few days where the weather is a little warmer.

The hotel is near Durban in a lovely small town called Umhlang. There is a nice beach and plenty of bars and restaurants.

Now to the hotel - I have stayed in a lot of Holiday Inn expresses and this is without doubt the best one. The rooms are nice, there is a small pool and a nice eating area (currently only serving breakfast). The hotel has only recently opened so there are things still to come.

Clearly as a holiday inn express you dont expect luxury but for what you pay this is an excellent hotel in a nice area and as such I would recommend to anyone.
