“One of the best Protea hotels”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

Other than the fact that I was erroniously booked in a smoking room (which I had to change after complaining), I had a very nice 1 night stay at this lovely establishment. Enjoyed everything in this establishment.

This is simply the best place to stay in Richards Bay. The views are wonderful over the harbour, and the rooms are interestingly appointed in a modern, unusual way. It is a short walk to an array of very good restaurants, and that is the problem. Food in the hotel is average and boring, and darn expensive to boot. There is simply no reason to eat in. R110 for a continental breakfast; R155 for full. There is nothing actually wrong with the food, but the variety is limited. At those prices, just go out! More positives: The hotel is well run and clean, there is free internet (limited to 500MB per day), and the staff are all very friendly and efficient. I highly recommend this venue, but be warned: eat out!

Room Tip: All are sea facing.

I had a very nice 1 night stay here. Fantastic big modern rooms with good beds and oversize bathrooms. Lovely views on to the bay.

Staff cant do enough for you and are exceptionally friendly. Wifi is good, you only get 500mb free but its not that expensive after that.

My only slight grumble is the food. Not sure if it was just the night I was there but they only had a buffet which wasn't that expensive but not that great and there were no other food options.

Other than that - a great option if you are in the area.

Room Tip: Its a long low hotel so try to get near the lifts or you will be walking a long way

What a pleasure to stay in such a well managed hotel. It was our first visit to Richards Bay and after arriving late and booking into a hideous bed and breakfast - Amble Inn, in Empangeni, we were amazingly impressed by the attitude and service we received at the Protea Waterfront. The rooms are well appointed, clean and spacious. Their restaurant staff are gracious hosts and any traveller would be well advised to consider this hotel as an option when selecting accommodation. Well done to the Management team, it is clear that you value excellence and instil this into your team.

This is a lovely hotel in a pretty spot with all rooms overlooking the waterfront. The bedroom has a desk and dressing table giving it the feel of a small suite. Lovely large bathroom with luxury bath. Very clean room and friendly service.

Room Tip: All rooms face the waterfront so have a pretty outlook.

I actually find this hotel difficult to fault to be perfectly honest. Perhaps one of the better hotels I've stayed in.

PROs - Quiet, good bed, lovely bathroom, prompt laundry and room service. V.good restaurant food and pretty good breakfast. Outdoor eating area and pool is nice area. Great coffee as well.

CONs - not many!! Sometimes you have to remind/nag reception staff on a request (such as fax, taxi etc.). Hire of business suites for meetings is very expensive compared to other hotel services. Wi-fi was a bit problematic, but hotel were upgrading system by April 2013 apparently.

Slightly noisy at night (Im a light sleeper) from nearby bars, and the sub-bass "hum" from the tug boats in the harbour is very noticeable, but they don't operate too late.

Overall - a great hotel, and highly recommended.

Absolutely one of the best bathroom/wash/shower facilities I've seen in a while - and I get around the world often! The shower (seperate bathtub) is decoratively tiled at an inward slope ensuring water doesn't flow out. They were also smart enough to include a strong plastic seal between the shower door and wall so again water doesn't splash or drip out. On top of all this, it is very spacious with an overhead rainshower spout and very agreeable water pressure. What a way to start the day.

Unfortunately, the day doesn't start or end with fresh water. Unlike other Protea properties which brag about their in-room (complimnetary and reuseable) glass water bottles, this property didn't seem to offer it. I did see bottles of water on the room attendent trolly, but not sure who those are assigned to.

Further problems were the breakfast buffet. The price is typical of other Protea properties, but the selection on our Sunday visit was relatively limited - though hot and cold options were available. For example, the bakery items were limited to just a few small presentation plates; compare this to Protea Wanderers where there is an entire section of the restaurant dedicated to baked items. The juices here were (all) almost empty with just pulp showing, and the glasses smelled terrible (moldy?). I spoke with a manager who apologized and said they were working on procuring more glassware.... which was not the issue here - it was cleaning them properly!

The area of the hotel overlooks a small water front with several parked watercraft. It is not Richards Bay proper and is not looking at the Indian Ocean. No fitness facilities exist but a light/short jog can be had outdoors along the water, not much more than that. Neighboring the hotel are a handful of waterfront restaurants and other retail businesses. The hotel itsself has indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the water. Generally speaking, with the type of facilities the hotel has (large restaurant, bar, conference rooms, location) this is targetted toward the business traveler. A bore otherwise...

Staff were friendly throughout - front desk, room attendant, restaurant and bell staff.
