We visited Tala in May 2007. The map they give you is great but it's sometimes hard to figure out which road you are on.
Wildlife: Good opportunities for wildlife viewing. You cannot see the whole "Big 5" here but you can get a couple of them. We were surprised to see hippos, and found our way down to the area that the giraffes were hanging out in and got some fabulous photos of them right by our car. Lots of buck and warthogs running around.
The picnic area is ample and well-shaded, with a nice swimming pool for a hot day. There are flush toilets! There is a hide nearby (overlooking the lake), and also another one a bit further away (on the other side of the lake) which is worthwile checking out.
Bring your own food.
Nice little gift shop, but somewhat pricey.
