“Wonderful stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

We've had a wonderful time, staying three nights in the Tambotie chalet and can recommend Bushwillow Lodge for anybody who seeks a romantic getaway close to nature without any hesitations. The overall service - ranging from delicious freshly prepared meals to excellent help with organizing trips in the surrounding area - was just amazing. The property itself is beautiful, very clean and well kept. It is the perfect place to stay as it allows daytrips to places like Hluhluwe game reserve and St. Lucia, but also leaves the option of just staying at the lodge, strolling through Kuleni game reserve and having some wonderful animal encounters. We truly hope we'll be able to come again. Great thanks to Jabu, Victoria, Jana, Julian and Liz for a highly memorable stay!

Hi Melanie, Thanks for the review. I didn’t get to spend a lot of time with you two but you were lucky to meet the whole team. Julian and Liz are rather busy at the moment, finishing off the final chalet in the new boutique - it is all rather exciting, and we are so happy to know that guests are loving it. Wishing you well, Jana

Hi Yuveka, Omashni and family, what a pleasure to have you stay and enjoy our lodge for the New Year. It was a pity that your Father lost his wallet somewhere whilst on the game drive, but he was so relaxed about it. Bushwillow certainly is a relaxing place, though your men still seemed to keep you busy in the kitchen. Thanks for the watermelon - it was just what was needed on a hot Hluhluwe day! Welcome back any time - your children were so well behaved and enthralled with the nature.

We had an amazing time and were so well looked after that we didn't want to leave. The staff took care of our every need and the meals were delicious. It is amazing to wake up in the morning looking out over the bush and seeing a little buck staring back at you. Will definitely return and have recommended it to everyone!

This is one property I would be more than happy to visit again and again. The hosts, Liz and Julian were among the best hosts we've come across in a long time, always ready to assist whenever necessary. No request was too big or too small. They were also able to recommend other activities such as going on a boat cruise, places to have dinner, snake and crocodile interactions, interactions with elephants, game drives at the nearby Hluhluwe Imfolozi Game Reserve, etc. in the area. Their staff were also great and made our stay as pleasant as possible.
The quietness of the bush, often interrupted by the sound of birds, a warthog family and a family of Nyalas, was exactly what I needed to recharge my batteries. I will certainly return and recommend this establishment.

Room Tip: The establishment does not have a television set, but then again, who needs the interruption of a te...

Hi Lesibana & family, thank you for your kind words and encouragement. It was lovely to have your family stay for a whole nine nights.... and your wife and children after much coaxing survived all this time without TV! Afterall, we have the bush TV, which is far better for mind and soul! And congratulations to your son for passing his Matric with such distinction - you must be very proud. It is so great when guests keep in touch with us after leaving, and we look forward to seeing you back one day.

We stayed four nights in the brand new (self-catering) cottage; a luxurious villa in beautiful private game reserve. Fantastic cottage with great large terrace with BBQ and jacuzi(!) and on fantastic location close to Hluhluwe Park. The only downside was some misunderstanding with the owners, which caused an uncomfortable feeling to us.

Dear Jurian & family, Thank you for your review and I am pleased to know that you and your family appreciated the cottage over Christmas 2013. Your 2 young children certainly seemed to be enjoying themselves! I am sorry if you felt uncomfortable during your stay. I can only think this was because I charged for the extra guest that stayed on the final night of your stay and that I reminded you that check-out needed to be by 10h00. I was concerned that we have the cottage looking spick and span for our new guests that were arriving that same day so that they would find it ready in the same way as you found it upon your arrival. Regards, Liz

Nestled inside the Kuleni game reserve in Hluhluwe, Zululand. We stayed in the Red Ivory room which is contemporary and very clean. It has its own private plunge pool and since game roams freely on the grounds you can game view from the pool. We also highly recommend the walking trails (fitness centre) inside the reserve.

Room Tip: There is no air-conditioner in the Red Ivory room but the ceiling fan does the job as well as a dip...

Hi Tamara, thank you for taking the time and to be our first review for our new boutique chalet: Red Ivory. Since these are our self-catering chalets, we did not see much of you at all! In fact, I don't think we actually met; only by e-mail! We are hoping eventually to take these chalets 'off the grid' and run then entirely on solar - hence our decision not to install air-cons for now and to see what the guest response is like. I think we will be going with mosquito nets though.... not necessarily for mosquitoes but so that guests can keep the stackable doors open at night and really get that 'bush feeling' happening.

We stayed for three nights at Bushwillow which is ideal for the St lucia wetlands area and also the nearby game parks. We were looked after very well, having breakfasts and dinners under the stars, magical, relaxing. Monkeys and bush babies on the roof in the middle of the night really make you feel that you are in the bush.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We offer 3 accommodation options, all very different from each other. We aim to satisfy all possible guest wishes. We strive to provide a very personalised service, and we pride ourselves on this. Bushwillow Lodge Our catered bush lodge with reed ceilings is a home away from home, accommodating just 6 guests. Couches in the main sitting area encourage visitors to relax with a book. The open plan kitchen means that guests can see and smell the honest home-cooked food being prepared for them where it shall be served either outside on the main deck or inside on the large eucalyptus table. The bedroom chalets with huge windows offer seamless views of the surrounding bush and are cosily furnished with wood and textured fabrics in rich colours. The jacaranda bathroom vanities are adorned with handcrafted basins and the frameless shower and free standing bath provide an interesting mix of old and new. Each bedroom has its own private viewing deck. Wooden walkways link the chalets to the main lodge and its pool deck where guests can come together and share their day's stories over a sun-downer. This is the place to stay should you want that authentic African feel and have your breakfast and evening meals prepared for you. Bushwillow Cottage Originally a farm rondavel this cottage has been lovingly renovated so that it blends sympathetically under tall and rare Lebombo-Wattle trees. It is a perfect self-catering getaway for up to 4 adults and 2 well behaved children. The rondavel offers a tastefully decorated lounge and well-equipped cottage-style kitchen. The two bedrooms are located off the central rondavel. One bedroom has a king bed with en-suite showers (indoor and outdoor) whilst the other bedroom has twin beds that can be converted to a king bed. Both bedrooms have pullout beds suitable for children and wingback chairs where one can sit and relax when wanting that quiet time. The thatched ceilings offer warmth to the cottage, and the deep beds with comfy headboards and crisp linen provide guest comfort. The open veranda with outdoor lounge furniture is a great place to unwind and watch the passing giraffe as one sits under the fans. There is a spa bath situated on the outside main deck where one can relax in the evening as the sounds of the African night spell romance. For families and friends, there is a gas braai on the outside deck which brings everyone together and where cooking is a pleasure. Bushwillow Boutique Contemporary design, high ceiling timber chalets with wooden floors combine quirkily with bright colour schemes and invigorating styling. Self-contained and spacious with stackable doors and lots of glass allow the bush to seep into the airy and vibrant rooms, providing an energetic contrast. Crisp linen, individuality and privacy guarantee a restful stay. Each chalet has its own kitchen, private viewing deck and a cooling pool in which to wallow. Perfect for couples who want to self-cater though it is also possible for Boutique guests to book an evening meal at the main lodge or have breakfast provided in their chalet fridge. ... more   less
