We decided to eat dinner at Amorello on our last night in the area having had a really enjoyable 9-holes of golf the previous day, and having been impressed by the staff team and the owner (very welcoming). With hindsight we should have been warned about the food when we had an inedible calamari snack after the game. The only flavour was salt. We complained and sent it back and accepted the excuse that the main chef was not working. We returned for dinner the next night, anticipating decent steaks at least. We told the staff about the salt. We ordered 300gm steaks and asked for medium-rare. When the food arrived we were first struck by the thick coating of a horribly sweet bbq sauce. We sent the steak back. When the new (?) steaks arrived we were struck by the tiny portions. We run a restaurant as part of our business and it was clear that at best the steaks were 200gm. Forget the size; had the meat been good quality we could have enjoyed the steak. Unfortunately, the meat was probably the worst I've ever tasted in South Africa. One steak was so full of gristle and fat that only about a third could be eaten. The other was a little better but had been so beaten that it was pulp. They were at least cooked correctly, but there was no flavour.
We asked to speak to the manager but the chef arrived. She was friendly enough but completely refused to accept that the portions were small. She did acknowledge that the meat was poor quality. She blamed the butcher.
Awful food, great service. Shame.

I must apologize about the quality of the steak as I was made aware of this issue the next day by my Chef and FOH, as they know how strict I am on quality. I have since taken it up with the butchery where we purchase all our red meat, as we only order Top A Grade meat from them, which we pay more than most would in order to get high quality products. I have printed this review to show them so as to avoid future problems. I am glad the steak was at least cooked properly as you will I'm sure agree that this can be one of the trickiest items to get cooked right.
The portion you were served on both occasions was 300g as we do not order anything smaller, except in Fillet. I have also checked my stock levels from that day's servings and they were both definitely Rump cuts.
The Cajun Calamari Strips which you ordered are a very spicy dish which combines Paprika, Cajun spice, a touch of Peri-Peri, and 2 other spices for the salty aspect, but finished with Lemon Juice/Lime to counteract the spiciness and bring out the Calamari flavor. It is a very strongly spiced dish which hits you straight away, but there is meant to be a really fresh lemon aftertaste to take away the initial saltiness. Perhaps we got the mix a bit off this time as it is quite a popular dish, same as our Spicy Steak Slithers. Let me know when you and your family come through again from Mozam, and I will make you the dish personally to enjoy and give me feedback on, at my cost of course. You also welcome to come have a free round of golf anytime.
Thanks again for the constructive criticism and hope to see you back soon.
