“An Awesome Surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2011

My brother booked us into this Guesthouse while we were in Durban for the FIFA World Cup. I was expecting the usual youth hostel type of experience but it was anything but. The villa is bright, extremely clean, well appointed and very user friendly. It is conveniently located in a very safe suburb, close to an entertainment strip with many fantastic restaurants and bars.

The staff were friendly and helpful and the proprietor, Elmar, was always on hand to provide useful advice and good company. My brother, husband and I just loved our stay there.

Good location, comfortable and very well run accommodations.

My only recommendation would be the addition of WiFi internet accessible to all the guests (even if at a reasonable additional cost). The pay-per-use, communal computer is just too inconvenient.

If ever I return to Durban I will look first for a vacancy at Gibela.

Thx for the kind words. If you head our way for Olympics 2020 we will offer wi-fi. No jokes aside it won't take that long wi-fi should be up and running by month end. Santa is installing at present.

I stayed at Gibela Backpackers with my girlfriend on February 2010 and enjoyed the place a lot! It is a kind of "deluxe" hostel, with very, very clean and well decorated rooms and some very nice shared bathrooms.

The hostel was quiet and the beds were great! I could sleep very well there and I am a very light sleeper!

The breakfast was fine, with toast, butter, jam, yogurt, fruits, juice, tea, etc.. You can eat all you want in a "help yourself" way.

The bathrooms were good and new, and the showers, hot. They also have a small library and internet acess. Near the hostel there are a lot of restaurants and bars and also a loundromat, wich is very helpful.

They also have a lot of information about things to do in Durban and very detailed description of how to get to places, security tips, etc.

The only problem was that I could not get a double bed and had to settle for twin beds.

Overall, a excellent place and surely a top choice in the backpacker category.

Possibly one of the cleanest and quietest hostels I have ever stayed in. It is non-smoking throughout which helps. Comfortable rooms and the communal areas are really nicely decorated in the local style. The gift / craft shop is lovely and actually quite reasonable. You can't fault the location, about 5 minutes from Florida Road with all it's bars and restaurants.

The service was great - they very kindly gave us a map and highlighted the safe and not so safe areas to walk, advice on getting to the beach and arranged tours for us. So helpful.

Breakfast was okay, it's included in the price so you can't complain. I would have liked free or at least cheaper internet and it was a bit too quiet - did not really make for a social atmosphere but great if you like the quiet. Don't come here expecting a party.

We stayed there for 1 night before flying out to Port Elizabeth. The Backpacker was clean and the service was efficient. The manager had to get up at 5:30 to open the garage door to allow us to drive to the airport and did it without complain.
As a couple we didn't enjoy this place much ( there was on 2 single beds in our room and the shower/ toilets were down the hall) but i reckon that for a single traveler/ a group traveling this will be very nice- they certainly have the facility to accomodate back-packing style travelers (well equipped kitchen, nice communal areas and a secured parking lot). FInal word on safety- we arrived at night in pouring rain and the place was hard to find. Once inside you feel very safe and they tell the adjacent streets are safe to walk at night which at least in our eyes seemed true.

We stayed at Gibela Backpackers for three nights and enjoyed it immensely. Their are a ton of restaurants on Florida St. just a 5 minute walk, and the botanical gardens is a 15 minute walk. If you are adventurous, the Victoria St. Market is about a 30 minute walk, and the beach is also about a 30 minute walk. But, it is also conveniently located to the highway. I highly recommend Gibela.

This hostel is an absolutely great place to stay and after a month of backpacking in SA, we can definitely say that is the cleanest hostel we have stayed in! The description in the Lonely Planet travel guide is completely true. It is located in a very nice and secure area of Durban and has a lot of restaurants and bars in walking distance. If you are looking for a safe and very quite place to stay, this is definitely your best option!
