My wife and I stayed at the hotel in Sept 2006. The hotel is what I expected from a 4-star hotel- I enjoyed the olde-worlde charm of the hotel and the intimate size.
The service was excellent- nothing is too much trouble. And I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The hotel has valet parking which I enjoyed.
The hotel has a bar, a lounge, a restaurant (where breakfast is served) and a pool. There's also a curio shop. I found the decor beautiful- impeccable in fact. The room was a bit small, but with all the facilities one would expect- although our room was officially not a seaview room, we did have a side sea view, which was great. The buffet breakfast was excellent.
I really dont have any complaints and we enjoyed our stay and felt generally well cared for. I would recommend this hotel for business or as a base to explore Durban and its environs.
The area of the hotel is o.k. I think one should not walk there at night but during the day the beachfront (especially the section between the Edward and North Beach- friends and hotel staff has recommended we dont walk towards South Beach and the blocks behind the beachfront) is fine. I can however see the difference since my last visit in 1995- I think it is unsafer now- or that is the perception. Just leave your watch and bags and cameras at the hotel (each room has a safe). But see Durban for what it is- and the beachfront- it reminds me of Miami with its tropical climate, palm trees etc. Its got a sort of 'faded' charm about it!
I went for a walk on the pier (at North Beach), swam in the warm ocean and went for a walk. Be sure to drive out to Umhlanga Rocks (Dinner-dance at the Oyster Box Hotel on Saturdays are excellent), go to UShaka Marine World, I can also recommend going out to see Zulu dances at Phezulu in Hillcrest. We visited the Gateway Shopping Centre (the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere)- although I prefer the Pavilion shopping centre in Westwille.
