“very pleasant stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2012

perfect location for business travellers who meet at the DCC.

Room was typical for Hilton, nothing special though. I missed amenities as they are standard in most Hiltons in Europe.

Only few wellness facilities, pool very small.

Food was excellent, restaurant not very fancy. Bar closed to early.

1Hotelparadiso, thank you for your constructive feedback.

All our Silver and upwards Hilton Honors Members do receive amenities in their room on day of check in, and all bath amenities are placed in all bathrooms at our Hotel.

Its great to hear your found the food excellent. I will however pass on your comments about the Restaurant and Bar to the Food and Beverage Manager. Thank you once again for your comments.

Warm Regards

Hilton Durban is in a good location and ranks as one of the best hotels I've stayed at. The staff were helpful, the rooms were clean and spacious and the executive lounge was impressive. The breakfasts and afternoon teas in the executive lounge was something to behold. Can't complain about the food. The only complaint was when a surly cleaner was upset when we entered the room when she and her deputy/associate were cleaning it. She grabbed our card (which worked) and didn't even acknowledge that it was our room. I guess if we were from the Monaco Royal Family we would have had more respect.

Stayed for a week and cannot fault the hotel or it's staff. It's primarily a business hotel with lots of conference rooms. The food in the Rainbow Terrace was very tasty. Some of which can be cooked while you wait.

Room was spotless and except for the banging of doors - Should really have soft close mechanisms on all hotel doors....Which can't really be helped. I cannot fault the hotel at all.

Stayed here for three nights ahead of the Comrades Ultra Marathon.

My last Hilton stay was in Nairobi and wasn't fantastic so I was interested to see how this compared and happily enough it lived up to the Hilton expected standard.

It's not a cheap stay compared to what else you can get but there are fantastic staff, excellent services, very clean room, excellent breakfasts and good wifi (although you pay for it).

Visited the Hilton on a Saturday for lunch. Had much greater expectations and was a bit disapppointed. There was a variety, however there wasn't must taste to the meals. The refills (buffets) also only got filled when someone requested, so there was a waiting period for this.

The deserts were also just ok - nothing much to rave about.

The cost way exceeds the meal expectation.

Not someplace i would go back to if i had a choice.

The only thing that i really desired from my trip was the view when you stood outside the restaurant - breath taking view of Durban.

The Hilton Durban is well located, downtown and right next to the convention centre, which is where i think it gets a lot of its business from.

It is a typical large chain hotel, rooms are well equipped although i thought the room was a bit bland, although a good size, clean, the bed was comfy, the TV worked etc.

Central areas are attractive and well done, the doorman is a real character ! Breakfast buffet was quite good, but the bar looked dead when i was there.

Bizarrely they have emptied the mini bar in the room and you have to ask them to fill it, there was not even a bottle of water in the room which i found odd. Internet is also ridiculously expensive at 85 Rand per hour or 170 Rand per day, especially when many large hotels in South Africa have started offering free internet like in other countries.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you for your taking the time to post a review on Tripadvisor.

Yes the hotel is ideally situated for guests attending functions and conferences at the ICC.

I will definitely inform our Food and Beverage Manager about your comments with regards to the minibar, however most of our guests were requesting that the contents in the minibar to be removed, hence we have removed the contents from the minbar and have placed a tent card in the room should a guest needs their minibar filled.

I will address the issue regarding our Internet charges with the IT Manager and Operations Manager.

I thank you once again for your review and we look forward to welcoming you back to Hilton Durban soon.

Kind Regards

The difference between a poor hotel and a good hotel at this level lies in the details:

1. A good hotel would have informed me (A Diamond member) in advance that the Executive floors and the Executive lounge will not be available when I arrive because they were occupied by a visiting head of state and her entourage.

2. A good hotel would refurbish itself every few years to keep up with the wear and tear and the latest trends.

3. A good hotel would not give a generic letter of welcome to its highest rated loyalty guest, instead it would personalize it with specific details. Even after this was brought to the attention of Operations Manager (whatever that means), they did not understand the whole point.

4. We were upgraded to a suite on the second day. The suite had just 1 bathroom which is quite unusual for any suite.

5. A good hotel would not send a surly and unfriendly driver to pick up the guest at the airport who would not even help with the luggage cart almost as if it was beneath his dignity.

6. A good hotel would not have its staff knock on the room door at 9.30PM to refill the mini bar. When this was informed to the hostess in the Executive Bar, her response was, " Oh they must have been busy in the day time and could only come when they are free"!

7. A good hotel would not send up the bellboy to pick up the bags when I had asked for the newspaper to be delivered.

8. A good hotel would not place the hairdryer in the room desk instead of the bathroom where it si logically and practically used. ( I have noticed this practice in almost all hotels in South Africa).

9. A good hotel would have fresh fruit juice available for breakfast specially in a country that is teeming with fresh fruits of all kind. When I mentioned this to the hostess in the restaurant and in the Executive Lounge, they both said, " Oh, I am sure it is fresh from the carton"!

Based on the above this is a poor hotel.

The Hilton Durban has a good location and appears impressive from the outside and the lobby. But the rooms and the service tell a different story. The amenity that is put in the room (not sure whether it is for every guest or only Diamond guests) included the flesh of dead animals. There was no marking or indication to this effect. My wife, a staunch vegetarian, took a bite and immediately threw up. We first informed this to the receptionist at the Executive Lounge who seemed quite disinterested and could not be bothered. We finally mentioned it at check out, and all that we got was an apology and a statement saying, "thanks for letting us know you are a vegetarian. next time we will keep this in mind."! They will be hearing from my lawyer on this.

You can rest assured there will be a canned reply to this posting from Roshini Naidoo the Journey Ambassador (whatever that means). This HIlton has a long way to go to measure up to the Hilton standard.
