“Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2014

After reading all the great reviews there's nothing much I can add, The Oyster Box Hotel is a must on your list of hotels to stay in when in Durban. The one small complaint is that the WI-FI is capped but this does not stop me from giving them 5 stars.

“Good food, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2014

We had dinner on the terrace in the early evening. The views are spectacular and the location is difficult to beat. The chairs outside are not very comfortable, but we moved inside after dinner and listened to some great live music over coffee.

The meal was very good without being exceptional, particularly as the prices are on the high side.

Overall a great experience though, particularly if you are keen for a good meal in a great old hotel overlooking the lighthouse and the sea.

“Cheese Platter”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2014

Went there simply to "have been". Ordered a cheese platter to share with my husband for "the experience".

Unexpectedly the best value for money ever - we could not finish the plate between the two of us! A wonderful variety of cheeses, breads, crackers, fruit, nuts and preserves. Beautifully presented. Could not finish it - and we can eat!

“Oyster box lunch.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2014

After the major refurbishing the  Oyster Box has emerged as a place to be seen and or to be seen with the Umhlanga  set. Taking a friend who had never been, we went. The imposing colonial uniforms of the greeters and the porters transport one to another time. A blend of the last outpost of the empire and Raj leave a Disney-esque  theme park feeling. This is not the faux of Walt, it is an efficiently run haven for those can afford the room rate.
We sat on   Ocean Terrace, made more scenic by the visit from two to pods of dolphins.
To our disappointment the food did not match up the view.
The highly touted curry buffet was sad; Durban is the home of curry in South Africa after all. The Vindaloo and the prawn curry were not for writing home about. The fish curry and the clay oven tandoor chicken were even less memorable. The crab gratin was bland lacking the sweet meat to contrast the mash it sat on. I asked for a caesar salad, mot only was it more like an usurper to the throne than Ceaser, the bare ingredients sat alone as if they were wallflowers until I asked for the dressing.
The service was slow, the server forgetful and maitre'd whipped passed through as if he was running to get Husain Bolt's autograph.

That this is a lunch service should not make the food preparation and attention to detail less than dinner. A lackluster affair
