“Delicious Curries in an Unassuming Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2013

Located right in the workshop, The Oriental can be found in the same place as Wimpy and other fast food restaurants. Durban is famous for its curries due to the huge Indian population and this place does not disappoint. We started with the veggie samosas and they were great. Not too doughy like the ones you typically get in the US, we got 2 orders to split between 3 people and it was perfect. Bunny Chow is a South African classic (half or whole loaf of bread, hollowed out and filled with curry; served with the bread for dipping) and it's a must-try at The Oriental. For the table we had chicken curry, mutton bunny and veg bunny. They were all delicious, but the veg bunny was by far the best thing we had that day. The flavors and spice were just right in all of the dishes, enough spice to have a bit of a kick, but nothing too painful. I have no doubt that they can make a spicy curry that can make you cry, but I didn't try one.

The restaurant is pretty large with a big outdoor seating section as well. I don't know if they take reservations, but we just waited in line by the door with everyone else until they had the right size table available. No AC makes it a bit of a warm place to visit in December, but the waiter gladly brought a full pitcher of water for the table, which helps with the heat and the food! The service was incredible: fast, helpful and friendly.

While I'm not in Durban that often, I will definitely be making a return trip to The Oriental.

“disappointed”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

We went to this restaurant situated in a busy area. The place is quite good but the taste was a big let down. We ordered vegetarian food, Dal, mixed vegetable and Naan. the dal was tasteless, the mixed vegetable was so..so but the garlic naan was good.. But the person who took us there had a mutton bunny and he was happy. It might be a bad day or their vegetarian section is not so good. We never went again during our stay at Durban.

“Lunch...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

Situated in a busy area of the Workshop, opt to sit inside if you dont want to be sitting in a busy and noisy bustling area. The Bunnies are great, but service is slow as they are so busy.
