Located right in the workshop, The Oriental can be found in the same place as Wimpy and other fast food restaurants. Durban is famous for its curries due to the huge Indian population and this place does not disappoint. We started with the veggie samosas and they were great. Not too doughy like the ones you typically get in the US, we got 2 orders to split between 3 people and it was perfect. Bunny Chow is a South African classic (half or whole loaf of bread, hollowed out and filled with curry; served with the bread for dipping) and it's a must-try at The Oriental. For the table we had chicken curry, mutton bunny and veg bunny. They were all delicious, but the veg bunny was by far the best thing we had that day. The flavors and spice were just right in all of the dishes, enough spice to have a bit of a kick, but nothing too painful. I have no doubt that they can make a spicy curry that can make you cry, but I didn't try one.
The restaurant is pretty large with a big outdoor seating section as well. I don't know if they take reservations, but we just waited in line by the door with everyone else until they had the right size table available. No AC makes it a bit of a warm place to visit in December, but the waiter gladly brought a full pitcher of water for the table, which helps with the heat and the food! The service was incredible: fast, helpful and friendly.
While I'm not in Durban that often, I will definitely be making a return trip to The Oriental.
