“Route 66 at its best”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2014

Wonderful place to stay .Sam and Monica were so friendly and helpful. I loved the character of the place from the funky murals to the older style accomodation. We found the room clean and the bed really comfortable. It is an experience to stay here and a must stay on your route 66 adventure. I would definitely stay again.

Well, where do we start. We have travelled Route 66 twice now, and am sorry we missed this place first time round.
We arrived late one evening and were welcomed wholeheartedly to this wonderful establishment with information and maps and detailed history of Kingman and surrounding areas. Taco was present throughout and our son built up a great rapport with him over our three night stay, despite being scared of dogs! So much so that he wanted to buy him from Sam and Monica!!

We stayed in a Marilyn Monroe themed room which was spacious with plenty of storage and very clean. It was very quiet too, but one usually gets at least one inconsiderate patron who either talks loudly at 1am or revs his car at 5am. Oh well, all part of the motel/hotel experience.

Sam and Monica have put a great deal of time and effort (I am sure money too!) into restoring this wonderful Route 66 motel. They are genuine lovely people who we went to have a chat with each evening - they were probably very busy, but still had time to talk and Taco was never too tired to show us a trick in return for a treat!
Please, please do not bypass this hotel - it is one of a kind, clean rooms, a cute dog and the unrivalled hospitality from two people you are ever likely to find.

My wife & I booked this hotel based on reviews and pictures. Upon our arrival, Sam, the owner spent at least 30 minutes giving us a narrative of the history of the hotel, Kingman & surrounding area, including an alternate route when we left town by traveling through Oatman, (don't miss it). He also gave us maps with areas of interest he marked. Then we got to pick our room, we chose the Marlon Brando room! The motel was built in 1937 and the new owners have been working the past 3 years to refurbish it after it had been sorely neglected for several years. They have done an admirable job so far and admit that they have much more they want to do. But our experience was that the motel "felt" like it may have in the 30's-50's on Route 66! The character of the room from the original front door to walk-in tiled shower was great. We enjoyed the comfortable bed as well as great service on TV and WiFi. The room was very clean. We were some distance from office but had no problems with signal.
We toured Kingman and enjoyed a beer at Black Bridge Brewing (great beer) & dinner at Dambar Steak House near the motel. Food & service were excellent.
Although motel had many guests, our evening was enjoyable & quiet even with railroad tracks near by (my wife is light sleeper).
We will be back in October & plan to stay at the El Trovatore again!

Room Tip: Book ahead and ask which celebrity rooms are available!

Exterior classic Route 66 and local history information by the owner was detailed.
The door frame on the room was splintered, as if it had been kicked hard at some time.
The "Elvis theme" was 3 pictures on the wall (stayed in a "Hawaiian" room in Seligman and it was done properly): pretty disappointing and shabby.
The shower room was gloomy, sink and toilet cramped, and no hot water. I was told this was down to a maintenance man.
I really looked forward to staying here and was most disappointed.

This motel was very cheap, but looked like a classic Route 66 motel and we were not sure what to expect when we booked it. When we arrived, Sam the owner spent some time describing the history of the hotel and the town. We were charmed. The hotel itself is very old, but the rooms (we stayed in the James Dean room) are spotlessly clean and decorated with loving care. We walked downtown to a local eatery and ended up at a microbrewery and met some great people. We took a cab back to the motel and Sam said we should have called him for a ride home. These are really good people, and there motel was the coolest place we stayed in on a 2 week vacation through Arizona.

The price is right, but there are definite negatives. We stayed in the Audrey Hepburn room and the main objection was that the carpet is dirty and stained. The bathtub faucet is broken, tho the shape the tub is in, it would not be inviting anyway. The bed sagged in the middle.

Prior reviews are generally accurate. There are cool neon signs. There are theme rooms, or at least rooms with movie posters. And the exterior has a large, interesting painted map of Route 66. Nonetheless, even at the relatively low rate of approximately $50 per night, this hotel is only an average value. Don't swoon over a kitschy exterior, unless that fulfills your primary objective in a hotel. There are several budget hotels nearby. One can also stay at a very nice Best Western just up the street for only about $20 more.

The hotel does have some deficiencies. First, it is on a hill above the railroad tracks. That means that the railroad noise carries up the hill into the poorly insulated walls and through the painted-shut windows. Next, it is just below historic Route 66. There is significant road noise. Wide gaps between the door and door frame further contributed to the noise issue. Then there was the drip, drip, drip. Later came the yap, yap, yap, whenever anyone went to the office.

A note about Taco, the unrestrained resident dog. If you like yappy dogs that can roll over, then the check in experience will be a joy for you. I don't, and it wasn't. I didn't appreciate the dog jumping up on me and running down the sidewalk and into my room as soon as I opened the door. That was after some delay with the proprietor trying to find the key to the room.

The hotel gets average marks, at best, for cleanliness. The first sign of uncleanliness is the couch in the office. It is significantly soiled, and appears to be home for Taco. The room furnishings are worn, but do appear to be fairly clean. The bathroom, on the other hand, is in need of serious scrubbing. In fairness, it may be that the tile and the porcelain are simply too old to ever get sparkling clean again.

I am a big Route 66 fan. This hotel has a fair bit of nostalgia. However, as one prior reviewer noted, this hotel just doesn't measure up. The owners should plow some of the profits into a serious cleaning and renovation of the bathrooms.

Room Tip: If Wi-Fi is important to you, ask for a room near the office. Even close to the office the Wi-Fi was...
