In August 2005, my husband and our two children, ages 12 and 15 years toured Soweto with a private driver guide. His name is Linda of Wilro Tours in Randpark Ridge. We asked for the real deal, nothing touristy and the truth about the situation today in Johannesburg. We walked through areas of Soweto off the beaten track, visited a private day care center, saw housing with no plumbing or electricity, the open market, etc. We also did the tourist thing with the Pietersen and Apartheid Museums, Mandela House, etc..We wanted the focus to be a historical lesson for our family. Most tourists would not make the effort to stay in Johannesburg, rather take the days instead visiting the Cape or wine country. We encourage anyone interested to experience a township, Soweto in particular in order to realize the heart and soul of the country. It was a moving experience for us. We brought clothing for distribution as well as made a monetary donation to the day care. Everyone was so humble, kind and curious, always asking about our homeland and our lives. We never once felt threatened.
