“A restaurant typically for the tourists”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

A beautiful restaurant with great quality of food, but highly expensive and don't think that you can only eat a starter; there is a minimum amount that you will be charged. So for locals it is not a restaurant that you would regularly visit; unless you have enough money. A real pity, but that is the fact. All tourists go there and so do all the airline staff that stays in the surrounding hotels. Also a bit frustrating that the staff makes a remark if they get tipped a little less than 10 %.

“maybe i expect too much...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

they have been around for ages and i have always heard good things, so it was quite disappointing. i expected great things but i got average. The service wasn't great, i felt a little neglected. for starters i had the garlic snails, to compensate the size of the snails, they put double the quantity in but the garlic sauce was very oily. mains i had a medium rare fillet, very dry for medium rare! overall not impressed, wont be back in a hurry

“A fun experience”

If you like meat you will enjoy this, a fun steakhouse experience at decent prices. Interesting setting with the butcher shop in the restaurant.

“Good steaks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 20, 2013

Visited for the first time with a business colleague. We both had good steaks - I would recommend the Giant Beef Kebab which is a mixture of 3 different steaks - a lot of meat! Nice wine too, and nice atmosphere once it filled up a bit.

“It's not only the steak that is aged”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

As regular customers of the Butcher's Shop for two decades at least, we know what to expect and usually get it: good steaks, ribs and other forms of flesh that had four legs when last alive. Steaks done to a good turn (although sometimes 'rare' is not as succulent as it used to be). Even the sea-food lovers have had no complaints. And the biltong is pretty good. Pick's wine cellar is still up there with the best, although not as pretentious as some of the real bling places around Madiba's statue, but very palatable. Waiters still as willing to do the necessaries when they are treated with respect, especially the foreign ones.

But, oh dear, don't look to close or you'll see the place is showing it's venerable age. Scuffs abound, stuffing and gilt looks a bit tired, dust on the backs of the setees in the "wine bar", which itself is reminiscent of some of the darker Tales of Hoffmann. And still those dreadful steak knives that warn of a sinew or two that may have been overlooked.

On the whole though, still worth an occasional return for the sake of nostalgia and a pretty good steak.
