“Quiet and comfortable....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2014

A boutique style hotel, away from the main tourist areas of Sandton and Nelson Mandela Square in Johannesburg, but still within easy reach of all the main shopping malls. Slightly awkward to get to, as whilst the address is shown as Rivonia Road, Johannesburg, the entrance is at the rear of the property, via a secondary road, which can be confusing to a first time visitor. Parking appears limited, but probably adequate for the number of rooms - unfortunately, there is no short-cut from there through to Reception (doors kept firmly locked, presumably for security reasons).

Pleasant staff, good reception, helpful and knowledgeable. Food in the restaurant really very good, nicely presented, but without being over the top "Master Chef" style, thank goodness..! The restaurant itself seems slightly awkwardly placed, as access to some of the accommodation is through the eating area, and also it's slightly disconcerting sometimes to see dungaree clad staff passing your table through to an exit carrying bags of charcoal or other items whilst you are enjoying your steak.....!! Something that needs looking at, I think.

Our bedroom had a King-sized bed, most comfortable, and the room was furnished in the style appropriate for such an establishment. The en-suite had a shower in the bath itself, which was a little disappointing (sometimes difficult for elderly folk in their late 70s, like us..), but all the usual complementary soaps and lotions were there. One slightly sour note was there were damaged tiles on the wall next to the loo, and two of the floor tiles were cracked - this needs dealing with. There is air-conditioning, but the hand controls were not fully effective, for some reason (fan speed not controllable, etc..), but having said that, it cooled the room effectively.

There is a nice enclosed courtyard, complete with swimming pool, surrounded in turn by a variety of trees, giving shade to those partaking of afternoon tea, or early evening drinks.. The nearby lounge and attached bar is very comfortably furnished, presided over by Hamilton, a most excellent, attentive, and knowledgeable barman.

We were in residence from 14th April for 4 nights, and whilst the Duty Manager (at least we assumed that's who he was, no identification offered) made the occasional round enquiring if "everything was alright", we didn't catch a glimpse of the General Manager once during our stay. In my view, it's essential that such a person should ALWAYS maintain a visible presence, interacting with guests, etc. Apart from being good PR, guests will feel comfortable that the boss has a hands on approach.

Would I stay there again..? Most definitely - it has a sort of cosy ambience, comfortable furnishings, nicely subdued (but not too subdued..!) lighting that goes with a sort of "middle class" gentility - and reasonably priced, too..! However, in order to make it perfect, a few little twitches need to be applied. Would I recommend it to others..? Yes, without doubt, but the younger set might find it a little staid, which to me is a blessing..!

But not perfect even if i think it will do for a short business trip. Ths boutique hotel gives peace of mind in sandton , johannesburg , south africa but has some flaws it needs to change for business man as myself or other visotors.
On a positve note the price i found on internet was really atactive . Rooms ate ok but bathroom can be cold. Breakfast was ok . General service in hotel is good and surely or a boutique hotel . Concerning hotel restaurant see my comment under le petit sel as this is the name of hotel res. Sleep quality was fine beside when neighbour dog started barking at 6 am and would not stop until 9 am and or cleaning lady's finding it necessary to talk very loud even if clearly stated on outside door knob please do not distrurb.
Furthermore having only 10 tv channels in a city as johannesburg of wich one was a channel only giving you latest sports results is a real shame . Having a phonein your room is nice but nt be.ing able to take it any further then room desk is not of any use.
Hotel has a nice small gym and pool and a very expensive bar .
If you do not like lifting your suit case to your room this hotel is surely not or you as no elevator and many steps ....
Hotel security is fine even if during my stay security at main gate during day ime was absent and gate was wide open . Private free hotel parking is nice,
Will surely stay here again hope they just change the small details they have to so to make this place even better or near petfect.

This Hotel is located very close to Sandton city, one of the modern parts of Joburg. By cab 120 Zar only. Near by the Hotel 3 mins by walk is the Morningside shopping mall with a lot of restaurants. The area around the Hotel is Morningside and its a safe area. The Hotel is not so big (assume 40 rooms) with a pool inside and a liztle garden area and although direct on the big Rivonia Rd located (parallel street is the entrance) very good protect in terms of street noises. The rooms are clean, nice and bigger and more comfortably than the most rooms in Joburg in this price range. inside the restaurant has a french tasted kitchen, the variance of dishes are ok, quality as well, breakfast is also good. kindly staff. All in all one of my favorite Hotels in Joburg, when you dont need big luxury but a optimal price value ratio and traffic distance. (in every case better than the city lodge hotel 500 closer to Sandton city)

Room Tip: the bigger suites are really bigger and the price difference are minimal. but also the standard room...

This is excellent for a short stay especially if you are doing business in the Sandton CBD and adjacent area. Rooms are spotless, well serviced and the staff are all friendly and helpful. I would definitely use the Falstaff again. However there are a couple of areas that could be improved on.
1. Weekday breakfast is only served from 06.30.. Given Jhb traffic, this makes a difficult late start into the morning commute. Breakfast from 06.00 would be more helpful. As it was, the staff were not ready even by 06.30.
2. Spoons for cereal, fruit and yoghurt are not part of the table setting. On Day 1 they were stacked in a glass amid the cold food; Day 2 they were totally missing.
Wifi access is wonderful but tv channels are limited; there is only one news channel (CNN) so not even a local one.
Otherwise, a hotel I would happily revisit.

Staff was always the best during my three week stay over there! Clean, large and cozy rooms, in a quiet, calm environment. All meals were rgeat, specially breakfast. Could enjoy myself during the weekends and be focused on my tasks whenever my job demanded.

Room Tip: The rooms on the back part were really quiet.

1 Hour early Check-in was tolerated for me on 13-Nov-13. Hotel staff are friendly and helping. Food options are wide and tastes good. Overall cleanliness is good. On a business trip from India, three nights I stayed. A free trip(Shuttle service) to Mandela square was provided by hotel. Pick and Drop was on-time. I would prefer to stay again here.

Room Tip: First floor with pool view is good for me.
