“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2007

Nice hotel, didn't eat here as the sandton city mall and nelson mandela square offer so much more. The breakfest is good and offeres alot.. The rooms were very nicely decorated and we had a suite facing the square. On weeknights when it is lively the square can be loud, if your terrace doors are open, however the noise did not bother once closed.. Highly recommend the Butcher Shop as a place to eat outside the hotel or the seafood rest. ajacent to it.. mall fab with all the designer shops and more... FashionTv cafe, is a trendy swanky place to hang, for drinks and good music.... It is not the best leading hotel of the world I have stayed at, but it is not or was not as bad as the other comments posted here. Crime can happen anywhere regardless, even in the best of the best...THis was and is a safe secure hotel, while there one night security was beefed up as magabi and other african leaders where having meeting at the hotel... overall it is a good hotel and I always stay here when in Joberg to shop..

So, This hotel - may be beautiful looking, but in this case you cannot judge a book by its cover.

I have traveled to more than 20 countries and many US hotels, and I must say that this hotel is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed. The room that we were given should have been "out of order" since the facilites were not functional. After 5 attempts and numerous "droppings of balls" we were unable to successfully fix the problem.

The food was the terrible (after spending 2 weeks in Cape Town - the mecca of food) it was almost net worth paying for.

If you must stay here, pack a lunch, and be ready to use the public facilities. It is just not worth it!

I’m not sure if this hotel has dramatically improved or if those who have written reviews have had exceptionally bad experiences here. However, we thought the Michelangelo was great. We were given a huge suite with a separate dining and living area, a full bathroom with two sinks, a large tub and separate shower and another half bath. Upon arriving in the room, we received complimentary champagne and a fruit basket. The common areas of the hotel are beautiful. Breakfast was excellent. The staff here was not quite as polished as at some of
the other hotels where we stayed in Africa (such as the Twelve Apostles in Cape Town and the Royal Livingstone in Zambia). However,
the staff was very sincere and tried hard to please. The one exception was when we arrived, no one came help us with our luggage right away. Other than that, they were fine. When we were leaving and called for help with our bags, someone came right away. The location is convenient with many restaurants and shops in the attached mall and Sandton Square. Our experience was great. During our stay, there were several professional basketball players staying here for the NBA's Basketball Without Borders program.

  • Liked — wonderful suite!
  • Disliked — no luggage help when we first arrived

A welcome luxury in the big city. The Michelangelo supplies superb rooms, good food, and a superb central location if visiting Jo'burg. The adjacent shopping malls are excellent and enable one to find any missing items.

I found the staff friendly and helpful, the food was not as good as many hotels in this class but the nelson mandela square, opposite and below the hotel contains many good restaurants including the fantastic Butchers Arms.

Overall a very good stay and what you wouold expect from a hotel in this class

My husband and I vacationed in South Africa. We flew into Johannesburg and stayed at The Michelangelo for two nights.

This a beautifully decorated hotel, with plush fabrics, interesting sculptures, and architecture. We booked a standard double room, which was very nice. The bathroom was a large marbled bathroom. The room was split level sitting and sleeping areas overlooking Mandela Square which was good for people watching. Lot's of restaurants. The hotel is connected to the Sandton Square Mall, which is great for shopping and is located in the business center area of the city. The square fills with the local in-crowds on weekends.

The staff at the hotel was courteous and cordial. Nothing above average. The staff arranged a couple of taxi's for us for a day trip to Soweto and transport to the airport. The driver that took us to Soweto even recommended a great little local neighborhood restaurant in Seweto where the food is absolutely delicious.

The Michelange is a comfortable hotel that we would stay at again.

  • Liked — The style and beauty of the hotel.
  • Disliked — Paying for internet access.

Wouldn't usually bother writing a review like this but on this occasion I don't want the hotel to get away with it...

Public areas are very grand and look lovely- you will be impressed when you walk in. Scratch under the surface though and the welcome and service are diabolical. Staff are offhand and unhelpful. Barmen refuse to give change. It's ridiculous that the only way to get between floors is by a lift which inexplicably seems to pick the wrong floor everytime and stops at all floors even when not called. Where is the public staircase? Add 10m onto any journey time to travel to the correct floor... Most shockingly my roommate had the safe broken into- and was accused by security of not locking it properly- luckily we could prove beyond doubt that she had definately done it right- but I am sure that some poor housekeeper got the blame for that when it could only have been someone high up in security with overide access. Never come across something like this before.

Definately not deserving of it's 'Leading Hotel' status- don't give this hotel your money- stay in Soweto it's cheaper, friendlier and you probably have the same likeliness of getting robbed.

Wonderful Hotel but we arrived around 5 pm and were gone before 9:15 am the next day.

We were delayed in our flight from Mala Mala to Johannesburg and did not get to the hotel until a little after 5 pm. By then, the stores in the attached Sandton Mall were closing as were most of those in the nearby Mandlela Square. My wife felt cheated, I felt like the gods were on my side.

Anyhow, check-in was a breeze, the room was big, clean, lots of light, etc. The bed firm and comfortable.

We raced to the square to see if any shops were open, ate in a great seafood restauran t there, one of many, and retired to the room. As we approached the elevators we admired the huge goldfish in the lobby pond.

We slept well as the hotel was quiet and walls thick enough so that you did not hear the people next to you. The next morning we showered and went down for the included full breakfast. It was one of our better breakfasts.

So why just above average? No wake up call!!! We had set the alarm though and were up on time. At 8:30 we asked for a porter at 9:05 as our driver was meeting us at 9:15. No porter showed and we had to lug (roll) our own bags to the pick-up area.

So dispite great service generally, we had two goofs and that cost the beautiful Michelangelo an excellent rating.

  • Liked — Typical four/five star digs.
  • Disliked — Not good on wake up calls and sending porter to room at agreed time.
