“Budget stay at great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

We had three days in Jo'burg at the end of our vacation in South Africa. This hotel is very well priced for the location. The room was big and clean, the bathroom huge. The breakfast is really poor, but then, one can beat the price of the room! Staff was friendly, the girl at breakfast gave me the impression she has to eat the breakfast she dishes out and this is the reason for her sour face... I can recommend this for a budget priced stay at a safe location

This is a good budget hotel and very very close to the Sandton city centre and NelsonMandella square mall.
I stayed in thiss hotel in November 2012, i sent there on a business trip. My primary purpose is to stay at a cheap hotel which is close to the city centre. And this one is a poerfect match, It is very close to the sandton Gautrain station and malls. It makes my travel time to office very less and walk to the malls to shopping very small and safe.

What i didn't like about the hotel, which was kind of expected, cleanliness and service. Also Doors and windows are very old and can easily burlgered. But may be due to location and 24 hr security it is still safe.

Room Tip: Choose this if you are on business trip or spend day out in the city. This is a budget hotel so plea...

Had two connecting rooms for my family of five, wife, 2 teenage daughters and 12 y.o. son. Very close to Sandton City Mall. For the price it was great and a fraction of the price of other hotels nearby. Friendly staff and a fantastic breakfast which is included in the room rate. I've seen other reviews criticising the absence of lifts but we always use the stairs in any place we stay anyway. There's only 2 levels in any case. Showers in the rooms could be better but at this price I'm not complaining.

Room Tip: Get connecting rooms overlooking back car park

I write this review after completing at 10 day camping trip through Botswana and S. Africa, so my review may be scewed as this was our first shower with fresh water, and sleeping arrangments above the ground in a while.

The Westford Hotel is located in a safe location in Johanessburg. That was our number one concern when booking a room as we were leaving for the airport early the next morning. The staff quickly checked us into our room, which was clean and offered good natural light and a nice view of the city. It is in walking distance to Nelson Mandele Square and the adjacent shopping center with plenty of restaurants and shops. The bed and pillows are very comfortable, the sheets are new, clean and pressed, and the bathroom, albiet small, offers good water pressure and plenty of hot water. I recommend this room for one night stay if you have a stopover in Joburg or are in town for a quick stop.

Clean, tidy rooms. Spacious and homely.
Great value for money with buffet breakfast included.
Breakfast basic but substantial.
Staff at reception were amazingly friendly even though there was a hiccup with booking.
Gentleman that showed us to the room was also friendly and very accommodating.

I was on a Business trip to South Africa and stayed in this hotel as it was very close to the place of my business. Don't go this hotel if you are used to luxuries of a 5 star hotel as it may really ruin your experience. It is an economy hotel with essential hotel facilities situated in the vicinity of the Mandela Square which is one of the happening places in Joburg. It is also closed to the railway station which has direct connectivity to Pretoria and the O R Tambo airport. The television in the room sucks with just 5 TV channels and a primitive LG television. The rooms are clean; however don’t be surprised if you find chairs of your dining table all different. Some bedrooms of the hotel have table made of iron frame with a glass top which offers you the impression of some kind of make shift arrangement by the hotel staff. Breakfast served by the hotel is decent enough for an economy hotel.
The staff in the hotel sucks big-time. The lift in the hotel was not working. When asked about it, the receptionist replied that it is only in last two days that it developed a problem and it would be fixed in next couple of days. However, I read a post on trip advisor where the traveler mentioned that lift was out of service since a long time. I carried the bags myself to the third floor through the stairs with no help from hotel staff.
In all, it’s a decent place for an economy hotel. Do not expect any luxuries.

To put it simply - avoid this hotel. It is not for people wishing to visit Johannesburg and stay at a decent budget hotel. Even though the hotel is located in Sandton, a good neighbourhood and safe by Joburg standards, the Waterford is literally on the wrong side of the tracks. You absolutely shouldn't walk to and from the hotel after dark, there are no restaurants or stores nearby, and taxis are few and far between. There are approximately 200 murders in Johannesburg every month, so when people say be careful, we take it seriously.

The hotel itself is nearly deserted, with a Twilight Zone feel. The doors to the rooms are rickety, and the only locks are the old style door knob type. There isn't Wifi any where in the hotel, and there isn't even internet service to the computer in the lobby. The in-room safe doesn't work. The TV only gets about three channels. The window in the bathroom is secured with a nail that has been hammered into the frame.

We don't need luxury by any means, but I do need to feel safe. It quickly became clear that we would be virtual prisoners in our room after dark, and I wasn't confident that our bags would still be in our room if we left during the day. The Westford did not come close to being as advertised on Expedia.

In the end, we walked away from our USD $200 pre-paid room without staying a single night. We booked a room at the much more expensive, but safe, Holiday Inn in Sandton.
