“Excellent quality, service & ambience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2013 via mobile

We celebrated a 60th Birthday here on 26th December with 16 guests and every course arrived on time and perfectly presented.with flair & flamboyance. We decided to return with friends for a romantic Valentine's Eve dinner and were once again delighted by a delicious meal We wwere very impressed that the staff remembered us and our drinks preferences, and came over to our table to greet us & welcome us back! Lovely option for an elegant evening out with all the fine dining niceties of amuse bouche, sorbet, cloches & friandise. We enjoyed calamari, carpaccio, king prawns, ostrich fillet, beef fillet & creme brulee prepared and pesented in interesting and unusual ways.

“Delightful restaurant overlooking Nelson Mandela Square”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

This restaurant became or regular favourite during a recent trip to Johannesburg.
The Michelangelo is a leading hotel of the world, and has several restaurants. The Piccolo Mondo restaurant is in two parts, one with a coffee shop providing light lunches as well as afternoon tea (with a pianist), the other is in the main restaurant. The chef is Italian as the name suggests. We only ate lunch once, but we visited for drinks several times. Lunch was very good and tasty, with quite an innovative menu mixing fish and meat on the same plate, and proper Italian dishes, not just the usual pastas. The prices are reasonable for a top hotel. There is an excellent wine list and wine was not expensive and wine by the glass very generous, and accompanied by various canapes free of charge. The staff are efficient and solicitous to everyone, even those arriving in scruffy jeans and flip flops, which as a 'mature' traveller I think inappropriate for this charming 5*hotel. A big attraction for us was the Smoking Lounge, where you can receive a light lunch, drinks and tea whilst also enjoying a cigar, pipe or cigarette, which is a rare find these days. The large picture windows open on to the square so you do not feel in a smoky atmosphere. The restaurant itself has a prime location overlooking the wonderful Mandela statue. We did not stay at this hotel, so cannot comment on the accommodation, but certainly we would be interested in doing so on another visit.

“Gourmet Dinner - Neetlinghof - Fantastic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

First gourmet dinner with the new flamboyant chef of the Piccolo Mondo. The food was great and perfectly matched with the wines. The "tastings" of the wines were generious and there was a great vibe with lucky draws etc. The service was amazing and friendly. the only suggestion I can make is that the reservation system for the event is cumbersome with forms to fill and scan in and send back etc.

“Lovely place and what a perfect service!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 9, 2013

We had dinner there on the 1st of january, as everything else was closed. We had reservations at 8 PM but as our children were tired, we decided to go a bit early. Our table was ready, no problem at all.
Superior service, waiter extremely polite and explained the special of the day, recomended a dish for my 14 y old daughter wo was not sure of what she should order. It was a hit! she loved it!
Fast service, delicious food, calm atmosphere, we had a wonderful time!!
Thanks a million!

“Wedding Anniversary nr. 26”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012

From the moment we walked into the restaurant we were treated like regular visiting VIP's, although it was our first ever visit. We got a table overlooking Mandela Square, even though our booking was made after 16h30 and these are the most popular tables. The service was impeccable, the food absolutely outstanding.(The best baked Alaska with an unbelievable meringue we have never had the pleasure of tasting before anywhere!) We even received a complimentary and very special anniversary chocolate gift, presented in a very authentic way!
Thank you to the maitre'd and dining room staff for their friendliness, attention to detail and excellent sense of humour. Last but not least; our sincere compliments to the chef and his staff for really making it a memorable culinary experience. (Visited 20/12/2012)
