This restaurant became or regular favourite during a recent trip to Johannesburg.
The Michelangelo is a leading hotel of the world, and has several restaurants. The Piccolo Mondo restaurant is in two parts, one with a coffee shop providing light lunches as well as afternoon tea (with a pianist), the other is in the main restaurant. The chef is Italian as the name suggests. We only ate lunch once, but we visited for drinks several times. Lunch was very good and tasty, with quite an innovative menu mixing fish and meat on the same plate, and proper Italian dishes, not just the usual pastas. The prices are reasonable for a top hotel. There is an excellent wine list and wine was not expensive and wine by the glass very generous, and accompanied by various canapes free of charge. The staff are efficient and solicitous to everyone, even those arriving in scruffy jeans and flip flops, which as a 'mature' traveller I think inappropriate for this charming 5*hotel. A big attraction for us was the Smoking Lounge, where you can receive a light lunch, drinks and tea whilst also enjoying a cigar, pipe or cigarette, which is a rare find these days. The large picture windows open on to the square so you do not feel in a smoky atmosphere. The restaurant itself has a prime location overlooking the wonderful Mandela statue. We did not stay at this hotel, so cannot comment on the accommodation, but certainly we would be interested in doing so on another visit.
