“Classic five star hotel but you need to tip in cash”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

To clarify, this is a 5 star hotel with all the bells and whistles - you pay the price so expect the standard of service. Lovely views, well appointed rooms, excellent breakfast, gym, spa, you name it; so my average is based on it is average for a 5 star hotel. The staff are friendly and helpful.

However, I feel it is badly managed. Firstly, staff are not always given the tip you leave, so if you leave it on the card thinking it is going to those who served you, think again. This leaves me feeling cheated, let alone what the staff feel.

I also learned not to complain about anything as staff was chastised quite severly, and I was bothered three times while eating dinner by managers saying sorry, even for me the incident was over as soon as I had said my piece. It just really seems like the management treat them badly in all ways, and I don't feel great with them giving me this great service while they are not being treated well.

In addition, the tour company they work with/recommend are a total rip-off. I went on the Soweto tour and would not recommend it, we were driven to the middle of nowhere after pick-up and then told: Lets agree on price! The tour itself lasted 1 hr less than advertised; I feel a hotel of this standard should not be recommending thugs.

My wife is currently staying at this hotel and here are her comments

-when checked into room the lock on door was broken and hanging -- they did come and fix
-safe in room was not working after 30 min they came and fixed
-breakfast room service menu has 1 item (3 egg omelette) - I ordered and the room service team called 3 times to confirm order and it arrived after 45 minutes
-gym is not open for servicing but never mentioned when booking reservation or checking in
-food at hotel is very poor - limited room service menu and restaurant is not very good
At best a 2

Dear happytravels
Thank you kindly for posting comments of your wife regarding her experience at Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel. Our sincere apology for the maintenance problems experienced in your room, this particular matter is receiving my personal attention in order to prevent similar reoccurrences and inconvenience to other guests. I note that the item chosen for breakfast was taken from the all day room service menu and unfortunately not from the room service breakfast menu placed as a door hanger and on the bed at turndown which provides for both Continental and Full English breakfast. Thank you for highlighting the possible confusion that may occur. The failure to advise guest of the maintenance occurring on arrival will be addressed internally and I thank you for highlighting this. It seems that on this occasion we fell short of the exceptional service experienced by fellow reviewers and we trust that you will give us the opportunity to "make it right" and showcase the high service standards of Radisson Blu Gautrain Hotel.
Kind Regards

Great views and ambience! Great food, modern chic mees jhb in a big way. Conveniently close to train and makes for a good conference venue. Rather overpriced food, and requires people for ambience. Visit on a busy night.

With so many fab hotels in the city, everything's relative. I’ve been staying at Sandton hotels for 15 years, including the Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Holiday Inn, Piazza at Four Ways, Sandton Sun and others. I stayed here for the first time this week and it’s as good as, if not better than, the best in town. For me the room is very good, not quite spectacular, but the lobby ambience, the excellence of the service throughout, the location and the price are top-notch. Early check-in; not a problem. Late check-out; likewise. From five til seven it’s the hip place to be. Free wi-fi throughout, terrific pool deck for eating, drinking and (heresy) smoking! The Gautrain’s a big bonus, given Joburg’s epic traffic issues, but the last train to the airport goes at 8.30pm, so the concierge will put you in a nice Benz for ZAR450. Like it a lot. I’m working on my next travel book and this hotel will definitely get a good plug (the first one “Please Step Aside, I’m A Frequent Flyer” is a good holiday read (Amazon)) Shameless Plug! Location-wise, you’re in Sandton Square in five minutes and it’s a safe place to walk around anyway. In any case, they have plenty of reasonably priced parking under the hotel. Unequivocally recommended!

Room Tip: Not sure what else they have, but I had a 'Business Class' Room, which has nice robes, great...

After a couple of returns to this property, I can say hands-down that the best quality is kept.
The ZAR disco on the top floor has been closed down, and the restaurant has been refurbished.

The whole process of checking in was swift and easy, and the room given at the 9th floor was just perfect.

A lovely fruit platter and a welcome letter from the hotel's guest relations manager did make me feel at home.

All in all, it is definitely one of the best places to stay in Sandton.

Opposite Gautrain..5 min walk (although negotiating the traffic lights was a challenge!). Great staff...ensuring lift door open, giving directions, that was before we even checked in! Check in was quick. Room great with all new amenities. Shower was very large with a flat overhead shower which was different but to bad. Good shampoo/conditioner/body gel brand. FREE WIFI was fast (yeah!). Hotel was rather funky with bold colours throughout. All staff we encountered were lovely and polite asking after us, seeming genuinely interested in our we were going. Breakfast was plentiful, good quality and great coffees (machiatto was great). Barista coffees included in B&B rate. Check out was effortless. The bellhop offered to take our bags over the road to the station. This was really great as it was the end of our holiday and the bags were getting heavy!

Will DEFINATELY stay here on our next trip to J'burg (as long as rate keeps at a fair value rate).
