I stayed here for six nights in August. What a delightful place. The facility and gardens are beautiful and very much have a feel in the architecture and materials of being local and "South African."
So even though I was travelling on business this was my first time in SA so it was a treat to feel like I wasn't just in another hotel that could just as well be in Dubai or Dubuque.
The small staff were incredibly hard working and attentive. I truly felt like my every need was attended to. The food was cooked right in front of you, all freshly made and excellent. A nice selection of South African wine and just a great homey atmosphere.
This was not a downside for me, but if you want shopping you can walk to, night life etc this is not the place. It's in a residential neighborhood. But if you want a comfy stop-over on the way to travel elsewhere in SA or a great quite place to return to after a long day doing business this is your place. Wireless internet was fast and trouble free.
It gives you a sense of the relative isolation you feel that my only real "problem" at the hotel was a rooster that crowed at all hours. My frist couple of nights, suffering from jet lag, this was frustrating. But I have to say I probably would have been awake anyway. Also there's no fitness center so if this is important to you this might not be the best place.
Also worth noting that there are two boutique hotels in Jo'burg calling themselves Afrique. I haven't been to the other -- near Oliver Tambo Airport -- so this is not a critique of it in any way. But if you're looking at this hotel you need to be sure you get the right one.
