“Why spoil the stay with redicilous check out rule?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2010

We recently visited Mount Amanzi with time share points for a weekend. The location was good as we could travel from JHB and Pretoria after work on a Friday and still enjoy a lovely evening socialising with friends and family without being too tired from travelling.

The facilities although dated is kept in good order and provides a variety of things to do for young and old,

The highlight of the trip was a treatment at the spa on site - very professional and relaxing.

The whole weekend was spoiled however when we wanted to check out on Sunday and was told you have to book a check out time a day in advance in order for the staff to inspect your unit - which in itself can be valid, but then being told we have to wait 90 minutes before someone would be available to assist us? Surely if you want to implement a ridiculous rule like that you have to ensure that you have enough staff available to assist guests immediately.

We eventually spoke to a manager who got someone to assist us after we had been waiting for 30 minutes, but when questioning him about this policy and explaining that we were unhappy about it his response was that they were fully booked every weekend (hence our business is obviously not important)...

I am very glad that they are doing well, but the management at Mount Amanzi must realise that they will lose clients if they treat them like thieves in a prison even when we were willing to pay a deposit or leave Credit card details as guarantee on any breakages...

We stayed at Mount Amanzi as a result of trading a time-share week. It is located about an hour from Jo'burg airport, and it is essential to rent a car. As the written instructions provided by the resort are meant for locals who know their way around, we had some challenges to find it,. We felt frustrated that despite many emails, we did not receive from them directions from the airport.

The grounds are well kept, and include a nice outdoor pool, small indoor heated pool, tennis courts, game room, and putt-putt (mini-golf) for a small fee. There is a reasonably priced restaurant on site, but the 2 nights we went to dine there, it was closed! Our unit was spacious, with a sofa, chair, dining area, double bed on the main level, with 3 single beds upstairs. We had a full size refrigerator, and stove. The bathroom was somewhat dated, with a shower with low water pressure. Overall, the furnishings were simple, but clean. There was a braai (grill) on the patio. There is no air-conditioning, but there is a standing fan unit.

A major problem is the terrible lack of sound proofing, as 2 units share a common wall. On the first evening, we had a group of 4 adults next door playing cards and watching TV till the early morning. Though they were not at all loud, we hear every word and heard the TV the following morning, as loudly as if it was in our own room! It was very difficult to sleep through this, even though it was a "normal" noise level from people just enjoying themselves. If you like quiet, bring good earplugs.

This area has some nice attractions, such as the DeWildt Cheetah center, and a Snake Zoo, but is generally quite quiet. Call before you go- the information printed by the resort indicated some tours started at 8.30 am and 1.30 pm, but when we arrived, we were told that it was only at 1.30 pm and had to return.

There are monkeys on the property- very entertaining and cute, but they made a mess of our garbage can by pulling out food scraps! An ostrich was also a pleasure to watch.

The staff is pleasant, and generally helfpful, the grounds feel secure and are well kept.

Pilanesberg Reserve is just over an hour away. It is a nice day trip, however I strongly recommend that you splurge on an overnight stay and game drive at one of the resorts "on-site".
