“Nothing special”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

It like walking into a second hand shop, nothing to write home about and the employees would rather be at home than here

“A well preserved stately home with interesting grounds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 17, 2012

The place offers good lunches and teas, but what I really like about it is the old buildings, and as a photographer especially the old sheds. Unfortunately one has to pay to photograph in the sheds, but it is worth while for the right shoot. I haven't been on a tour of the main house for a while, but the last one that I went on was good!

“a nice victorian experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2012

Am glad i joined the tour here which was organized by a friend. We were split into 2 groups and we enjoyed the whole experience. A luncheon was prepared to highlight our visit. Though it's a bit far from my place in Pretoria, I'd still bring my visiting family and friends to experience the early 19th century Victorian style of living.

“Home of the UNCROWNED KING OF THE TRANSVAAL”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 9, 2012

Most GPS Navigators get you to the improved R 104 road to this museum BUT don't take you to the roadside Signpost at the Pienaars River little bridge so you might need to phone the Museum (012-7559541 or 012-8021485) for directions over last 8 km.. For this reason use the coordinates 25-45-14.14 S , 28-22.54 E..
If you get the best guider at the house to the history of Sammy Marks and his 40 room home the Mansion will come alive for you and is extremely interesting and the contents as original as possible and all pertinent to the history.
Mansion a tributel to what affluence shrewd hard work CAN achieve in a lifetime.
Two story building so be prepared for stairs.
Weekdays might mornnings be overrun by tours by schoolchildren.
Having some knowledge of Southern African history helps BUT will be crowned by this experience.
The phamphlets from reception are excellent and highly informative too.
Sammy Marks from his extremely humble beginnings having evade Russian conscription at 9 years of age , by his creating the first factories in Southern Africa and his involvement in Scrap Steel and Coal, a Distillery , Diamonds and agriculture and the politics of the time and the influential friends he cultivated certainly gained a stature at the time worthy of his unofficial title "The uncrowned King of the Transvaal "
Sammy was very far-sighted and "Green" for his time to in late 1890's have used Hydro-Electric power from a nearby passing river for his home.
ALSO technologically advanced and sophisicated to use small coal stove to extract smoke and "supercharge" kitchen main coal stove (Without a chimney)
Large grounds for kids to run around in and for family picnics with excellent Tea Garden meals and Picnic baskets available.
Indeed locals who have seen the house before bring friends and see the house again or visit just to enjoy a meal at the Tea Garden or picnic.
Essential visit .
Don't miss it.
