When growing up, I wanted to live in the Melrose House. I always thought (and still do) that it is one of the most beautiful houses I have seen. When I visited the house itself, I was disappointed at how little one can see of the house. It is very much "over-museumed" with glass panels restricting people from entering rooms. Non the less, it is perfectly maintained.

“Fascinating, a trip through time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013

This well-kept (so far) house was the residence of a wealthy British family and retains all the charm, grandeur, and elegance of that bygone era of British imperial power. One can really be transported to when the house was home to a family of husband-wife and three daughters, see how they lived, what conveniences they enjoyed, and what sorts of obstacles the servants had to navigate. The artwork in the home, the various ornaments and decorative pieces are all delightful.

The surrounding area is pretty rough, but there is a fenced off parking area accessible from the back of the house, which makes things a lot easier for visitors. Getting there on foot is not recommended.

“Interesting Historic Home”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

Melrose House was an interesting stop during my visit to Pretoria. The home is near a pleasant park not far far from the Gautrain station. The rooms and house itself are very well preserved and the signage is informative. A good stop for the history buff.

“Unkept museum”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

The staff is not interested, they just sell a ticket at the entrance and continue chatting. Melrose House is a bit abandoned, quite dirty and dark.

“A Glimpse into the old World”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2012

The House provides a valuable view of what society was like in Pretoria at the turn of the century. Make an hour available to get glimpse of up-market living in the 1900'2 - with a view of the signing of the peace accord after the Freedom War of the Boers against the British Empire.
