The Mother's Day Brunch that was held on 12 May 2013 was a total disappointment and a disaster from the start.
After enquiring as to the details of the event, a 'fine dining' brunch seemed like a wonderful way in which to spoil my mother. I duly booked and sent the required proof of payment, and requested the time that the event would be held. I received no satisfactory response on email, and so I phoned instead. I was made to feel like an inconvenience from the very beginning. I was told that I had been 'allocated the 9am slot'. Since I do not live in the area, I replied that this time would unfortunately not suit me, as it would require an extremely early start to be there on time. I was bluntly told that there was nothing that could be done, they were fully booked. Shocked at the level of discourtesy, I explained that since the moment I booked I had enquired what time the event would be held and had not received a reply, and that I was extremely disappointed that they could not accommodate my request. Finally, after almost begging on my side, I was told that I could arrive at 10am. I felt that I should be extremely grateful for the great inconvenience that I was putting them through.
When I arrived at 09h50, the receptionist curtly informed me that I was early. I felt embarrassed to be chastised on arrival, and to cover it I made a joke asking whether I should walk around outside for 10 minutes to make up the time difference. This was not the reception that I expected, nor wanted my mother to receive.
We were shown to our table. The menus that we received were not the same menus that had been advertised online and emailed to me. Instead of 3 options to select from, there were only 2.
The buffet food was acceptable, but by no means out of the ordinary. The haddock that both my mother and I had as a main was extremely salty, to the point of being unpleasant. The restaurant was grubby, the doors to the kitchen clearly visible from where we were sitting were smudged with grease. The coffee cups were not clean when our tea and coffee finally arrived. Our finished plates were not cleared before the tea and coffee cups were set down, and awkwardly we all had to move our own plates out of the way and sort of hold them, so that there was sufficient space.
The final straw came when a lady came to our table at the end of the meal and presented the bill, to no one other than my mother, and requested a service tip. I was absolutely mortified that my mother, on this mother's day surprise, of which my mother was quite unaware until we arrived that morning, was presented with the cost of the experience, and asked to tip. I found this totally disgusting, but more so because it was unthinkingly presented to the very person who should have been celebrated and treated to the 'fine dining' and upmarket experience that you advertised.
I feel that this brunch was extremely overpriced for what was offered on the day. It was not at all what promised online and on what should have been a very special day, was a total let down.
I will not be returning to this restaurant, on Mother's Day or any other day.
