“An exquisite experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2013

We stayed at this exquisite boutique hotel for only 1 night. What a pity it was for only a 1 night!

The hotel is beautifully located in the Francolin Conservancy. The Moorish architecture makes for an interesting twist to the area and hotel, but everything is perfectly done from the massive entrance doors to the small courtyards and massive rooms.

We realised that as we were the only couple in the hotel for the night that we actually got upgraded to the one of biggest suite in the hotel (the Udaipur Suite). We haven’t experienced a suite like this. Every piece of furniture in the suite is original antiques and although there are lots of different styles and pieces, everything works together perfectly. The bathroom is huge with marble & mirror cladded walls and a big bath as feature. Out of the bedroom and bathroom are doors leading onto a patio overlooking the whole reserve, from which you could actually see the animals. The lounge in the suite actually has an antique Balinese swing in, on which you can sit and lounge. All amenities in the rooms are top-notch and the mini-bar is also included in the stay with Gin & Whiskey & beers etc in. Everything in the room exudes opulence and originality.

The rest of the hotel is actually just an extension of the room as described above. Antiques dotted throughout the hotel with various relaxing areas and sitting areas to indulge in the opulence. The restaurant at the Orient (called Restaurant Mosaic) is also another tale to tell (please see separate reviews on the restaurant)

Service is perfect from the hostess & owner, Mari, right to the waiters at the restaurant and around the hotel. This truly is a hotel where you check in, and forget about what goes on outside in the world, and get carried away about the location, hotel, rooms, food and service. We actually requested if we can stay another night, but Mari informed us that the restaurant and hotel was actually closed the next evening. But she said that we are more than welcome to only check-out after lunch at 4 the following day, which we did.

An exquisite hotel that will see me as often as my pocket and diary allows it!

Room Tip: Try and do go for the bigger rooms - it's worth the extra money

A friend had told me about the Orient hotel and being Indian, I was quite intrigued to try it out! I couldnt wait and made my booking in February to go in August for our wedding anniverary celebration. From the moment we got there, I fell in love with this beautiful place. What tranquility, set amidst such divine decor - truly transporting one to a place that one can really revel in. We loved the gallery on the site and soon it was time for dinner! What a treat. I cant stop singing the praises of the chef and the service we received. Breakfast was another culinary delight! I absolutely loved every minute of our time here. We will definitely be back for future celebrations at the Orient.

Room Tip: Look online at the decor of each room and decide. Maybe ask for a tour of the other rooms to see wh...

My husband and I had stayed at the Orient before and so it was the obviously choice for our 10 year anniversary. I have stayed at many 5 star hotels, but this place is something special. There is no detail that is overlooked and the intimate personal attention anticipates every need. From Lazurus at the gate to every staff member we encountered, the service was at the highest level of professionalism and friendliness. The grounds are beautiful, the rooms unique with 'finds' that have been acquired from around the world with an artistic eye. And Chantal's food is unparalleled. We hope to return every couple of months to see how new seasonal ingredients get incorporated into the menu.

We stayed at the Orient for our anniversary, having been recommended it by a friend, as we we looking for something a little different and special. We had a fabulous stay and it was just what we were looking for. The hotel itself is very different in design, and while the rooms are quite dark, which is not my personal taste, we still enjoyed our stay, and all of the authentic little touches make them very unique. The real highlight here is the cuisine. We had one of their tasting menu dinners and wine events, and it really was first class throughout. I don't think I have ever been treated to such amazing food anywhere else in South Africa, and would recommend this to anyone. We will become regulars, it really was a very special treat to have dinner and stay over here.

You can tour the palaces of Constantinople, Gujarat, Kashmir, Kathmandu, Khorsabad, Marrakesh, Mogador, Nineveh, Rajasthan, Samarkand, and Udaipur without leaving your suite at The Orient Private Hotel. Each of the ten suites is lavishly decorated in the style of the exotic destination it represents.

Indulge yourself and have a look at the suites on the hotel’s website. Contrary to so many websites that overpromises, the photographs on this one cannot begin to do justice to the luxurious detail of these rooms.

While the hotel’s setting within a walled compound in the Francolin conservation area lends it an aura of mystique – enhanced by the oriental style of the architecture – it is the way in which individual attention is lavished on the guests that sets it apart. This is carried through from when the gate guard welcomes you by name, to the parking attendant who takes care of the luggage, to the waiter who awaits you in the sitting room with a refreshing drink on arrival.

The hotel has no reception area – you walk straight into the sitting room – as all paperwork and payment is taken care of in advance; so no checking in or out.

We booked the Samarkand suite, which has a “loveseat” balcony from which to secretly observe the sitting room below – from behind exquisitely carved wooden screens – and, regrettably, only got to stay for one night as we had another engagement elsewhere the next morning. So, we did not get to explore the myriad nooks and crannies of the property – from an art museum, to the opulent Petit Alhambra private cinema that only seats 20, or the well-stocked library.

But then again, there is always next time...

This was a 25th wedding celebration and we could not have selected a more romantic setting. From the moment we drove through the enormous wooden fort doors the dream began. We were welcomed by the owner and given an exotic cooling pomegranate drink. Climb on the magic carpet and be prepared for a trip of a lifetime The Kashmir Room has a huge antique bed as do all the rooms. Every nook and cranny is filled with paintings and Eastern memorabilia. Nice touches such as rose petals floating on fountains. Supper at the Mosiac restaurant was the highlight. A menu of 7 courses with wine pairing was unforgettable. This is a must return as we never even had time to see a movie in the gem of a movie theatre that reminds of bygone days.
