If you visit Johannesburg and Pretoria and want to have a better understanding of the complexities of South Africa, combine visits to the Apartheid Museum, Liliesleaf Farm, and Freedom Park with the Voortrekker Monument and Museum. Like the pioneers of the US, the Voortreekers migrated north from Capetown seeking new areas to develop. The perspective presented at the monument and museum is of a people seeking to establish a new life. The black Africans, whose land they eventually occupied and developed, are not treated with historic sensitivity thus the need to visit other historical sites for a complete picture of what led to Apartheid and an understanding of the stratification in South African society. The monument and museum have informative collections of artifacts, although many displays in the monument are somewhat stale. The views are outstanding from the grounds. It is definitely worth a visit.
