“GREAT LOCATION, BUT NO POOL”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2011

Best feature is the location: walking distance from Newlands rugby/cricket, Cavendish shopping etc. Rooms are OK with extremely comfortable beds. The foyer area had a slightly strange pong as if a smoking convention had just taken place. Good breakfast, and friendly and efficient staff. The biggest downside is no swimming pool, which on a hot summers day in Cape Town is a problem. They do have vouchers for access to the nearby Sports Science Centre which is fine if you want to go to gym but not for relaxing around.

I usually stay in a guest house, but this hotel's location right opposite my workplace is so convenient. So i thought "what the heck".

Not my worst mistake, but I was sorry. Rooms are SMALL! Bathrooms are even smaller....not sure if you should close the door whilst bathing or leave it open. So much steam when you close it that it feels like a sauna, but the door swings INTO the bathroom so it constricts the space when you leave it open.

A big NO to the in-bath shower....with a curtain! Who does this anymore? Not what I expect at a 4 star hotel.
Aircon was noisy and leaked when on for longer than 10 minutes. In Cape town's swelterin summer heat this needs to be looked at. Really could not wait to leave.

On the positive side: The staff are truly superb, always asking to assist and if you are comfortable. Breakfast is a feast, but way overpriced. A walk across the street will get you breakfast for 2 at the price they charge for 1. Room service food was great, although pricey....but worth the convenience.

For a night or two, go for it!

We stayed in a double room for 1 night and I can't say I'll be back. The large rat running through the car park, the 1/2 hour wait for a room that should have been ready, the airport shuttle not booked although already paid for....
On the upside: free parking, good location, good room service food.
Rather choose a good b&b or guesthouse in the area.

Very good beds, in fact, the best beds I have ever slept in, and I have travelled a fair bit.
Apart from that it is quite an ordinary and impersonal hotel, not suited for a vacation, maybe rather for a conference or the like.
The reception staff not very willing to book restaurants, or call cabs for you. They said only certain staff had access to make external calls.. ?!
Good breakfast, very friendly staff, but sort of misery with the coffee for some reason. Not that they wanted to save, but we had to beckon them for coffee for each cup, we like 2, 3 cups in the morning. Coffee on the weak side, other than that breakfast assortment was fine and tasty, not the largest selection but not the smallest, either. Middle of the road.
BTW, it's quite far from the City Bowl, so not so good if you want to see Cape Town. Taxi cost approx. 160 R one way. But take the Metro Train. (it is really not so dangerous)

We stayed at the SS Newlands for one night during our visit to CT for a Super 14 game! 5 min walk from Newlands. This was the perfect place to stay! Hotel was recently renovated and had a good feel to it! Rooms were nice and clean! Breakfast was great and offered more than what we expected! Good reataurants in the area! Overall it was ideal for our needs!

1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2009

Stayed in October for one night, even though we had planned to stay longer. Called hotel in advance to get street number as neither hotel site nor confirmation message showed full address. Arrived early afternoon on Sunday to a lobby void of guests, expecting to be in our room minutes later. Checkin nevertheless took more than 20 minutes due to multiple errors by reception staff. Friendly inquiries as to why it was taking that long went unanswered, receptionist not even lifting her head to acknowledge question.
Room in a good state, bathroom spotless, bed linen good quality and mattress comfortable.
Had dinner in Indian restaurant that is linked to the hotel; good meal at a moderate price. Unlike rest of hotel good service.
Selected continental breakfast after inquiring about prices and deciding that - after viewing the buffet - the full was probably not worth the amount. When bill arrived it stated full breakfast for two. Even though the proof of our continental choice was on the table and a dining room staff member confirmed that we had only had the continental breakfast, the staff member at the desk insisted we had a full breakfast. Very unpleasant discussion ensued, with dining room staff member backing us and very politely insisting that desk staff member made an incorrect assumption: dining room member had served us throughout and can confirm that only a continental breakfast was served. We tried to end this unpleasant situation but desk member insisted on having the last word throughout. Turned so acrimonious that we immediately cancelled further nights and left as quickly as possible. This proved difficult as check out took almost 40 minutes, once again in an empty lobby. Reception staff in the morning as grumpy as their colleagues the previous day.
Went straight to the Urban Hip Hotel (we stayed in Circa, the other hotel "Icon" is one street away; http://www.urbanhiphotels.co.za/) sight unseen - an apartment hotel with full kitchens in each apartment, oodles of space, smack in the middle of town, free secure parking - for R1,000 per night for a studio apartment, cheaper than the Newlands Southern Sun. I had stayed many times at the Garden Court De Waal (another Southern Sun hotel) and had greatly enjoyed my stays (vastly cheaper as well with good service throughout).
There is no need to stay in the center of town as the Cape Town's southern suburbs are great for reach any point on the peninsula or in the wine region. A B&B or other hotel would be advisable, as the Newlands Southern Sun offers poor service at too high a price.

Thanks to an e-mail advert from the hotel about their upcoming specials, we chose to stay at Southern Sun Newlands. We've booked hotels over the internet, sight unseen except for photos on the website, with some pretty nasty results. Southern Sun Newlands is a real gem and has restored our faith in using the internet to book hotels -- with, of course, the benefit of Tripadvisor. Some of the positives of the hotel: a) the concierge provides timely e-mail responses to any questions; b) location is easy to find if you are driving; c) ample secure parking; d) hassle free check in by friendly/professional staff -- the porter came out to the car as we were opening up the trunk to get our suitcases; e) great hospitality (light snacks and beverages available while you are waiting); f) large, bright, modern reception and dining area; g) clean, luxuriously comfortable, modern rooms with fluffly duvets/mountains of pillows/crisp white linen (not at all the older photos on southafricatours.co.za); h) safe walking distance to a shopping mall (we ate dinner at a restaurant there and walked back when it was dark) and the Montebello Artist Centre where a bunch of artists have restored an old brewery and have located their studios; and most important, very responsive and understanding staff who really understand the meaning of customer service ! This is a hotel name that we will seek out where ever we travel and you should too.

  • Liked — Bed/linen/pillows extremely clean, crisp and comfortable
  • Disliked — Cafe menu items (other than the breakfast).
  • Tips/Secrets — Can't think of anything specific right now.
