“Beautiful setting, but definitenly not a 5-star facility”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

My husband and I decided to spend new year's eve at this lodge, as a friend of mine had stayed there and said it was really nice.

Let's start with the positive: the location is very convenient, only 40min drive from Joburg.
The lodge is located in a beautiful area, the scenery is amazing, very nice walking trails where you get to see herbivores.
We loved the room design, and it overlooks a small lake with green hills in the backdrop, it was a delight to see from the bed. It was also quite relaxing to enjoy the view while sitting in the small balcony.

the negatives are unfortunately more:
when we first got to the room, we found a rather big flying bug and a spider inhabiting the bathroom. It is quite understandable that such things would be common in a place nestled in nature like this one. However, I'm sure if the room was thoroughly cleaned before our arrival, no such thing would've occurred!!

The pools are really in a poor condition. The main pool, located in front of the reception and restaurant area, is the only one where you can swim (if you can manage to ignore the green mold on the sides!). There were only 4 chairs around, and just one umbrella. when we got there, we asked for an umbrella, stayed there for hours, but it never came!

As for the other smaller pools, I think they should be called stagnant ponds rather than pools...

As for the service, that's truly the worst part.
Upon check-in, the receptionist, though very friendly, was at a complete loss and confused. Couldn't find our reservation right away, and when we asked to settle the payment upfront, she didn't even know the amount, seemed to take a guess at it " Oh, I think it's..., ummm, yes, yes, right?" which is hardly something to expect from a 5-star accommodation...

Again, the same person upon check out, was still at a loss as to whether we had settled the payment or not, whether we had attended the new year's banquet or not, whether we had paid for it or not " On the system, you are ready to check out, sir"... meaning if we weren't honest decent people, we could've simply said Thank you and goodbye!!! So we explained that we did pay for the room, but still had to pay for the banquet that we attended, but where no one asked us to sign in. so she excused herself to go and check. we waited, but as she was running late , we got bored and decided to spend some time by the pool, then come back to her...

At the new year's banquet, the food was good, not outstanding, but not disappointing either. but service was really slow. anything we asked for took at least 5 minutes to be delivered, like cutlery and water!

the next morning, when my husband asked for an espresso, the waiter got so embarrassed because he didn't know which kinds of coffee were available, excused himself to go and ask...

In conclusion, the location, setting, room, are fantastic, but how this place is rated 5-star really escapes me!!

To have a Lodge/Hotel in the right setting and with the right ambience is only half the battle won, the other half is good maintenance and service and this is certainly the case in our experience where maintenance and service was realy not up to scratch especially from a 5 Star facility.

What we found good about the Lodge was:

Checking in and out was painless, rooms were clean and well furnished, spacious with all the trimmings. Ample parking and a shop for fishing tackle equipment. Spa is beautiful and prices are reasonable with an assortment of treatments

What we found not so charming

Service

Barman was intoxicated and very grumpy and could not supply us with the cocktail we ordered from the drink list as he did not have all the ingredients, ordered Castle Light received a Castle - Twice. Supper was the worst service I have experienced in a very long time, the waiter was incompetent and no management staff checks up on the service, we tried to order wine twice and just gave up as we could not be understood and when she finally understood we were told they were out of stock. Whilst this bad service was going on staff members were playing with each other to such an extent that on two occassions I had to get out of their way to avoid having them run into me. Half way through our meal the waiter stood 5 Meters from us but did not clear the table whilst not being busy at all in fact she had two tables of two people. Al the dirty crockery was on the table when we left. The fridge in the room carries no stock .....not even water, their explanation is you have to organise stock before arrival which can probably work if you are informed. We had to get up at 3h30 to be in time for our hot air balloon flight which meant we had to be in bed early so we were asleep at nine when a staff member started knocking on the door, we ignored the person but he/she refused to give up and kept on knocking for five minutes before going away, still don't know what it was about.

Maintenance

The bathroom basin and bath could not hold water because of faulty plugs. You cannot leave an electronic device to charge as the power is managed with your entrance card which means you can only charge devices if you are in the room. All the lights were not working in the room.

That is what I have, I reckon the maintenace issues would not have bothered so much if the service was up to scratch so excuse me for listing the small stuff as well.

Room Tip: Send your drink and snacks requirements when you make you booking, Interview your waiter with a pen...

We expeced a lot more from kloofzicht than the poor service we received. We asked for a earlier check in that was a problem, yet after our late arrival they were stil busy getting the room ready, reception didnt know what's going on and we even had to ask for bottled water for our room. The turn down service was done for one person although we're two people in the room. Worst of all we were woken up before 6 in the morning due to a cycle race after we were told it wouldn't bother us at all, and that everything wil be on the otherside of the hotel. We left without breakfast and cancelled our second nights stay. Not 5 star at all!!

We have been to Kloofzicht before for the day (cycling event) and because the place looked fabulous and the surroundings are so beautiful, we decided to go and spend a night there. The rooms are spacious, clean and very nicely decorated. The view from our room was fantastic and the dinner and breakfast we had was also great! Unfortunately there were a few things that resulted in me giving this establishment only an average. After checking in at the hotel on the Saturday afternoon, we received no assistance with getting our luggage to our room. One would expect this from a 5-star establishment, especially as the rooms are quite a far end from reception and/or where you can park your car. Furthermore, the toiletries in the bathrooms were not replenished, the image of the television was very poor and the remote control did not work. I truly hope they can fix these sort of things, as the venue is really beautiful.

Very close to Johannesburg. The rooms are nice and spacious with a gas fire. The view from the room was great, overlooking one of the dams. Service was excellent and the spa treatment we had was one of the best. The food was really tasty. We had Saturday dinner and Sunday lunch, which were both very tasty with great service and wine choice. The only disappointing part was the shower in the room had not been cleaned, which was sort of resolved.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking one of the dams, great to wake up to and watch the vapour rising while ha...

My wife and I stayed over at Kloofzicht for one night for our 3rd anniversary. The rooms were a nice size, clean with big bathrooms. The place itself is very peaceful with lovely lawns looking over the fly fishing dams. I would say that it is a very romantic setting. We arrived in the late afternoon and after settling in we went to dinner which was FANTASTIC! The food was extremely tasty and well presented too. The bar prices are very reasonable. In the morning we went on a hot air balloon ride over the magaliesberg which was an amazing experience and in the afternoon we enjoyed a couples massage in the spa followed by a healthy lunch which didn't really live up to expectations. I would definitely go back to Kloofzicht.
