“Love Walking to the Airport Terminal - Dislike the pricing!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2011

We have stayed here many times, since the hotel opened up two years ago. It's convenient especially when we have an early morning flight, or have a lot of luggage to bring back to our home in Luanda, Angola.

The rooms are well-laid out, good size, and the bathrooms are very nice, including a nice bath tub; there are plenty of towels. The bed linens are good quality, and there are plenty of pillows.

There is a 21" TV, which is a good size, with several channels for viewing.

There is a safe in the room, a desk, with several plug ins, and a regular size hairdryer (love that feature!)

Dislikes: having to pay R90 for breakfast (approximately US $15.00), normally, a double room goes for R1,309 when booked online. That's slightly over $220 a night.

Love: being able to walk over to the terminal, and whenever I have a lot of luggage, any of the porters inside the hotel will gladly help bring over the luggage to the terminal.

The gym is very nice, by the way, small, but functional.

Overall, I would recommend staying here when you are tight on time, jor have a very early morning flight. But if you have some time to spare in the morning, better stay at any of the other hotels nearby (including other City Lodges), and save almost $100!

Room Tip: All the rooms are basically the same. Ask for a room facing the Gautrain.

We chose the City Lodge because we didn't want to be waiting for a shuttle bus at the airport at Johannesburg after an evening arrival. They responded to our booking email promptly, and as we were booking multiple rooms for a family made sure they were close together and interconnecting.

The location turned out to be great. Just follow the signs to the the Parkades from Terminal A, and and the signs are easy to find from there. Only 5 minutes walk and easy with luggage. Easily close enough to have dinner at the airport They had our reservation, and the room numbers were as promised in their email.

The rooms were clean, not cramped, and nicely furnished. Perfectly fine for an overnight airport stay. I'd even consider this hotel for a couple of night stay in Joburg, as the train from the airport gets you into Sandton shopping cheaply in 15 minutes.

Another night in Johannesburg was not on our itinerary but an unscheduled and long flight delay meant a change in plans. City Lodge was about a third the cost of the nearby Inter-Continental and things only got better. The hotel is part of the airport complex and the international terminal was only a few minutes walk via a safe undercover walkway past the carparks. This also means easy access to shopping and food outlets in the airport if you have some time to spare. This was a last minute check in but the process was friendly and efficient. The room was new, clean and well appointed. We had a decent meal in a bistro style restaurant and a good nights sleep.

We had stayed for a few nights in suburban Johannesburg earlier in the month and had enjoyed our stay but if we return to Jo'berg City Lodge would be our choice,

We stayed in the City Lodge, connected to the airport, the night before flying to our game reserve. The rooms were clean, affordable, safe and convenient. That and a good price is all we were looking for. This is a place to stay over, but not a place to stay more than a night or two. If you are concerned about safety while connecting in Johannesburg, this is the place to stay as you will never need to leave the airport. Glad we stayed here.

We (myself, wife and daughter) needed a place to stay after a long day of travel with arrival at JNB at 21:30. After collecting bags and clearing customs, we figured it would be close to 22:30--and we wanted to get to a hotel as quickly as possible. Fortunately, this hotel is located right at the airport (over the parking garage actually). You reach it by walking down a long corridor, but it's very safe. Many police and security guards around who were helpful in pointing us in the right direction. We had adjoining rooms as each room can only accommodate 2 people. Rooms were clean, convenient, and safe. Wi-Fi was available. We also had the buffet breakfast in the morning (extra cost for that). It, too, was very good. This is an ideal place to stay if you are arriving late at night or have an early flight in the morning out of Johannesburg. In our case, we were driving to Botswana and had easy access to the rental car area which is very near the hotel.

I stayed at City Lodge for one night between flights on my honeymoon. During the planning, I worried that the InterContinental was the only option at OR Tambo. But I simply couldn't stomach the $500/night rate, and opted for the reasonable rate at the City Lodge.

The decision was, without a doubt, the right one. City Lodge is an eminently comfortable, nicely decorated, and friendly hotel. While brief, our stay was lovely and we couldn't ask more for a hotel that is literally inside the airport.

And if you're looking for a nicer meal, take the five minute walk to the InterCon, and enjoy a tasty meal.

I needed a quick place to grab some sleep after arriving in South Africa from the United States and before the final leg of my journey to Botswana. Normally I shy away from airport hotels but glad I took a leap of faith with this one. It's located just minutes by foot through a walkway connected to the airport. Once you get on the hotel elevator you immediately forget you're at the airport. The lobby is inviting, with an open floor plan and high ceilings. The staff were all smiles and helpfulness.

The room was clean and spacious. Great hot shower, a must for me. And a bed so comfortable that I could have spent the day in it. The wireless Internet was really good. Was able to video skype back home to the United States without a problem.

The only complaint about this place is its restaurant. The dinner selection was limited and not especially interesting. Very typical hotel fair. The one time I was reminded that I was in an airport hotel. When we ordered, three of the items on the menu weren't available despite there only being three tables full in the restaurant. So we moved our dinner to Quill's, a restaurant at the other airport hotel, the Intercontinental. Quill's was incredible! Worth the five minute stroll to get there.

Overall, I'd definitely stay at this hotel again when needing a good night's sleep while transferring through Johannesburg.
