“Great stay and ideally located in CBD”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2013

We stayed her for 1 night in May after a 4 week road trip through South Africa, Namibia and Botswana. The rooms are fantastic and you get a very good service. The rooms are spacious and real apartments, even as you stay in the hotel.

Shuttle service is great for travel around JHB.

The complimentary breakfast is also good. Although specifically for SA, not Europeans.

The hotel is ideally located for business travellers who has to do business in the CBD of Johannesburg, e.g the mining Head Offices. The hotel rooms are large with a "lounge" area, small kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. The linen is clean. The restaurant serves excellent meals and the staff is freindly and helpful. During the day security guards are stationed on the corners of the street making it safe in the immediate surroudings. Even though there are no supermarket there is a small Woolworths food close by for those who would want to prepapre there own food and there is also a free shuttle service available from the hotel to one or two selected malls in the suburbs. By staying at this hotel which enable you to walk to the businesses close by, beat being stuck in the traffic at peak hour.

We stayed here for 4 nights in September. The staff are exceptionally helpful and cheerfull, automatically dispelling the notion that Jozi downtown hotels are nothing to write home about. Cassius (front desk) was a cool funny dude, who was happy to impart with his extensive knowledge on how best we spend each day and what to look out for.

The rooms were spacious, the buffet meals were VERY well cooked and would rival hotel meals in some of London's finest hotels!!. The hotel runs a complimentary bus service to key parts of downtown, i think it would help if these times are published in advance so all clientele could plan around the scheduled times as we found ourselves spending copious amounts of time awaiting the shuttle services arrival/departure.

All in all a good stay and would recommend this to anyone who whats to see the real Joburg CBD part of town.

Good morning Mr LOng,

Thank you for your review. Feedback is vital for us in order to improve and take our product forward. JoBurg city centre is in a process of revival and more and more tourists are comming back to town. We are trying to meet this need with improved info at the hotel, a free city shuttle and recently launched our own tour department which can assist with all your tour needs. We hope this will improve the experience we offer. Your comments about the scheduling is appreciated and I am sure we will incorporate this in 2013.

Looking forward to welcome you back.

The Mapungubwe Hotel does not have pretences beyond its means. Situated in the inner city, in a building which served a bank in the area which used to be the indisputable CBD of the city, this hotel delivers what it promises. It might not be the safest area in town, but it isn't entirely intimidating. The staff was friendly and willing to be of service. My two night stay was in a kind of a fair size junior suite - a room with a lounge area and a kitchenette. The kitchenette had a full size fridge, microwave oven, and electric stove, but no mini-bar. The room had no balcony, instead it had four windows overlooking the inner courtyard, pool and recreation area which can get noisy in the early evening. The bathroom had both a bath tub and shower cubicle. The toiletries were good but surprisingly no tissues were available. Some of the furniture and fittings showed wear and tear, but generally speaking everything worked as it should. The double bed, with only one side-table, had a mattress of good quality while the bedding was clean. A peculiar annoyance stemmed from the architecture of the building itself. My room was in the sixth floor and was accessible through the use of two different and separated lifts situated in two different areas of the building. The solidity of the walls of a previous bank building ensured that there was no noise from other rooms. There was no Wi-Fi in the rooms although free Internet access through wired LAN was available. Twist, the hotel restaurant, again without pretences, was decent and fit for purpose. Room service was quick and efficient.

Good morning Luisp8,

Thank you for your detailed response of your experience. We are trying hard to put out a no pretence product with easy to use facilities. I have a good team that is supporting our customer experience as we value this as our biggest asset. For the five year that I have been involved with the JoBurg Inner City renewal it has only gone forward in leaps and bounds. Be sure to return to see the progress and what JoBurg City will be up to in 2013 !

The rooms are large with separate bedroom. The linen are clean with good housekeeping service. The kitchen is modern but it there is no supermarket around. However free shuttle services within the CBD is awailable. The staff is friendly and helpfull.
The restaurant offer buffet most of the time at reasonable price.
The swimming pool is located in between the building square and hardly has any sun there. Not in great use but will be OK during hot days

The rooms were nice. There was a separate bedroom and bathroom, then a living room kitchen area. It was comfortable. The included breakfast was very good and included a cook who would make you eggs or an omelet to order as well as a variety of hot and cold options. The front desk staff could use some work. Some were very friendly and tried to be helpful but mostly they just stood in a group behind the desk and chatted amongst themselves and ignored us. The area was ok to walk during the day but I don't think I would venture out at night, and everything is closed on the weekend so there's nothing to do close. There is a shuttle but don't count on it. When we tried to book it from the airport we were told it was to busy. When we called to get picked up at the Museum of Africa it took an hour and a half, then when we took the shuttle to the gautrain and arranged a pickup at 4pm they forgot about it and never wrote it down. We had to call them twice to get picked up. The shuttle was very undependable and that brought it way down in my opinion.
