“Nice and clean for short layover.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

I am a world traveler with over a million miles flown and I've experienced any where from a 1 star to 6 star. The hotel is nice, quiet, and very clean. 10 minutes from the airport with shuttle service include. I would def stay again for a quick layover. It's a small hotel but, its very clean and the customer service is great. I would recommend. I would give it a 4.5

Really? I didn't review this place already? It was a great little airport hotel which was oozing character (that's a good thing). So many hotels are boring. This was not, and it was the tired trendiness of a W or aloft. The breakfast was fantastic, with stunning airport views. I actually traveled earlier than July 2014, so maybe it has changed. I dunno

We stayed here for one night on our way to a Botswana/Zambia/Zimbabwe OAT trip. We got here pretty early (like 7 AM) and had the day to do our own one-day tour of Johannesburg. The hotel was helpful in storing luggage and actually got many of us into our rooms by 9 AM.

It was a very comfortable hotel, with a good restaurant. The only thing is that at dinner I wish we had realized they had a buffet before we ordered from the menu. The meal we ordered was very good, and we might have ordered that anyway, but we hadn't noticed. The breakfast buffet was very good. Even being near the airport it seemed to be pretty quiet.

A Bad situation was made somewhat worse by rude front desk service. We were stuck at the airport for an additional day since we couldn't get on our evening flight to the US. Tired and not particularly happy we walked over to this hotel for a good night's rest and something to eat. The rude desk clerk was not helpful at all. We asked if they had any negotiability in their rates and he snapped at us irritably. He assigned us a room (no break in the rate) and when we got up there it was just a weird place. The bathroom was part of the bedroom with no door separating the two. My traveling companion and I are close friends but there is really nobody that I want to share with in that way. We tried to call the front desk to see about switching rooms but nobody answered the phone. We hiked back down to the lobby and they did give us a different room but by then, there was nothing open for eating. (Wouldn't you think in any international airport hotel there would be?) We asked in the morning if we could have an extended checkout by an hour or two and were told that we would have to pay for another full night if we wanted that. Thanks but no thanks.

Room Tip: Make sure that the bathroom is separate from the sleeping area!

I heard from the employees the overbook happens frequently. We had a voucher (paid for one night) and they could not find my reservations (11 people).
They took us to a lower class hotel, with no meal available and a not recomendable neighborhood.
I do not recommend, to make the story shorter.
Bad service and mismanagement (or lack of it).

The rooms in this hotel are like large jail cells--well decked out jail cells. The hotel is all a cement structure that is themed like an aviation hangar--kind of a weird choice for a Marriott Hotel. When you enter your room you walk through the bathroom which has a glass wall for the shower to your bed. It is all very East European Institutional look. This is made up for by a very engaging, friendly and supportive staff. The restaurant is actually good. And the business center and pool area are great for getting boarding passes and passing some time in the shade while awaiting flight time. The hotel gave us free shuttle to the train station to allow us to go downtown during our lay-over as well.

I spent one night at Protea Hotel Transit O.R. Tambo Airport and the experience was overall very good. The hotel is conveniently located inside the transit area and offers a great alternative when one has to take a late night or early morning flight. The hotel is clean and offers a serene atmosphere, which contrasts with the busy and agitated ambiance of the airport terminal. The room is sound-proof and I didn't hear flights taking off or landing. The in-room TV offers the convenience of displaying flights arrival and departure schedule.

On the down side, this hotel is expensive: I paid double of what I often pay when transiting through Johannesburg. Besides, the hotel doesn't have a restaurant so you have to go to international terminal A to have meals. Fortunately, it's a couple of hundred meters away. The view outside of my window was horrible: all I could see was tubes and antennas. Finally, I had only one bath towel: no hand towel, no face cloth. I want to believe that this was just one employee's oversight and that the hotel's hygiene standards are higher.

Room Tip: Rooms on the third floor have day light as opposed to those in the mezzanine.
