Like most of this hotel's clients, I used the Protea as a bolthole during a long connection, after a tiring journey from Australia (looks quite close on the map!). Open door, take shower, lie on bed, take another shower, go to gate, wait four hours for delayed aircraft.

This was the first time that I have stayed in a room with curtains but no windows and, as it was in the middle of the night, this cunning ploy nearly fooled me. Some might argue that this is Robben Island restyled by some boutique hotel chain. However, I don't think I have ever had a more rejuvenating hotel stay; excellent shower, really comfortable bed with crisp, clean sheets and a negotiated rate of USD80 for six hours.

Travelling 12+12hours total it is simply impossible to wait 8 hours without having a good shower and sleeping, definitely beautiful, nice attendants and "reasonable price" if negotiable.

The Protea Hotel at the International Airport in Johannesburg is located inside the international airport terminal, before immigration. The location is great for travellers in transit without a south african travel visa. The rooms are clean and of a 4-5 star standard. There is free Wifi in the rooms upto a limit of 100MB per night. The password is provided at the reception. Other than this, the facilities are very limited. There is no restaurant/cafe inside the hotel however food can be delivered from an airport restaurant to the room till 9 pm. We stayed here for a night and had an average experience. There were no toiletries(soap, shampoo etc) provided in the room when we checked in. We were asked to pay separately for a toothbrush and paste set. This when the room rate is USD300+!. When I called housekeeping for these simple amenities, i was told that someone will be coming over to deliver these to the room. After waiting for 30 minutes i had to go to the reception to get these myself. The staff was cold in general but not unfriendly. All in all the hotel stay was unsatisfactory given the price point and the level of service. One good thing about the room was the availability of square and round pin plug points for charging gadgets. Given the overall service experience not sure if this was by design or was incidentally available in our room.
